Is anyone here a member of the Sierra Club?

I like to know what it means to you to be a member. I've looked at their website and think it could be interesting if things are really being done to help the environment.

And a RWer rolled her eyes and told me they were nothing but a bunch of tree huggers. That's enough to recommend them right there. :)

1. It probably depends on your local chapter

Go to some meetings. See if you like it. What have you got to lose? I've gone on some outings with my chapter but never joined for reasons that are too long to write about here

Not much. You send them some money and they send you a newsletter plus requests for more money.

What does that mean, a bunch of tree huggers? I find them a lot more cuddly than RWers.

3. I joined when I got the famous GWB Tax Refund

in 2002 or whenever. Just endorsed the check and sent it on to Sierra Club. I've never taken advantage of their outings, but I think they do good work. They have the numbers and the dollars to get things done.

I'd like to make some donations to groups that are protecting the environment.

7. Check out Working for Change

I have their long distance service and a credit card. At the end of the year they donate a percentage of their profits to liberal causes... and you get to choose where the percentage of your money goes. It really helps the little guys.

9. I am, there are perks.

You get the magazine, and most local chapters organize hikes, nature walks, and other community building activities for their members. You also get notified about both local and national environmental issues, including suggestions on how you can personally help. I'm currently working with my own local chapter to try and save some local wetlands that are about to be paved over...the kind of local environmentalism that many federally focused organizations ignore.

I live in AZ where so much construction is going on that is destroying the desert. If I could help preserve some of the desert I'd feel like I'd done something useful for my state.
