3. Yeah
The problem is, because I'm so short, I weigh the same amount that a normal woman would weigh (~155), but I look so chubby because I'm only 4'11.
Ideally, I'd like to be around 140 for the proper BMI, but I eat right (don't eat much red meat or carbs, 1 soda a week, tons of water), exercise (4 miles a day walking/jogging, swimming, softball). In fact, I don't eat MUCH at all. I just don't lose weight
But because I'm working out/eating right, I don't feel too bad about myself. Dad was short and stout, so am I.

12. Yes, 25 lbs overweight.
I have lost 25 lbs so far, though, through Weight Watchers. Unfortunately, I have hit a period where I want to eat everything in sight. Can't seem to treat food normally -- get too many cravings, and end up eating too much of the craved food.

13. As Of July 4th, I Had Lost 30 pounds!!!!
After quitting smoking last year, I gained 25 pounds. With a low-fat DIET ALONE (no exercise program) I lost 30 pounds in about 8 months.

14. I've lost 20 pounds
Didn't really do anything special, except watch portion size, and started working out -- pilates. Before that I was a real sofa yam, so maybe the extra movement moved that superfluous flesh right on out. Good luck to you. Pilates is a great workout that doesn't do anything horrible to you joints.

16. Welcome to DU, SpankieJane
I started a Pilates thread the other day and didn't get that many respondents. I just started doing the mat work a couple of weeks ago and I love it. Of all the exercises I do (weights, jogging, martial arts), it's the workout I look forward to most.

15. Check out this website before you do anything
www.bodypositive.com

Also take an inventory

1. What's your age
2. What's your height
3. Do you have any health issues, like high blood pressure, high cholesteral, diabetes, thyroid, etc.
4. When you say you're 25 pounds overweight, where are you getting the number that you think is your ideal weight
5. Where do you carry your fat
6. Have you tried dieting before, what were the results? Did you gain the weight back, did you return to a higher weight than you started out at
7. What are your eating habits, have you gained weight recently because your eating habits have changed
8. How active are you? Do you exercise?
9. Are you able to do all of the physical activities you like to do without difficulty?
10. Are you able to find clothes that you like that fit you well?
11. What are the body types in your family?

The thing is, depending on your age and height, 25 pounds over some arbitrary weight is not that much. Some bodies are predisposed to carrying some fat and sometimes fighting against that in order to meet societal pressures can result in being at a higher weight than your natural set point.

On the other hand, if you are 25 pounds over what has always been your usual weight due to having had a baby, or a short illness which left you sedentary, or other factor that has temporarily changed your natural weight, do not panic. Just go back to your regular routine, exercise and over time you should return to your natural weight. Dieting and fooling around with your metabolism could set you up for an unnecessary battle with your own body.

Good luck!

17. Last December I was 240 lbs
Now I'm 190

I've lost 20 lbs in the last month and I'm inching toward my goal weight of 175.

I'm 5-10, so I figure 175 is good enough for me. Even though a "healthy" weight for someone my height is 165.

19. No, I've gone past that....
I'm considered "OBESE" (lovely word)
6' 4" and 288#...
I need to lose about 80 pounds to get the BMI down. Funny thing is, I started cycling, and put on 8 pounds of muscle right away. I was 280 or so when I started...

And I'm Diabetic and have high blood pressure, too.

For as long as I can remember. Then about a month ago I jumped to 210. Last week, I got a bad cold and dropped back to 200 within a few days. Weird.

22. I was mildly overweight
I weighed 155lbs and am 5'5''. I was working part time at a fast food restaurant and always ate there when I worked. I gradually (over a year's time) lost 15 pounds after I quit. Then I lost ten pounds within a few months of being cured of my chronic sinus infection for reasons that I do not understand as I ate significantly more and didn't seem to do more. I had some kind of intestinal illness for the past couple of weeks and am now becoming too thin. I kind of wished that I had that illness when I was mildly overweight and not now. Luckily, I have begun to feel like eating again and it is being absorbed so I should stop shrinking.

23. Loosing weight is easy...
I have always been overweight until recently, not really fun when I was young and in school, you all know what I mean :)

Recently, I really discovered how easy it is to loose weight without all the expensive diets and training programs and not to mention all the stupid type of diets around. They never work or work for a short time due to their lack of insight into the weigth loss issue.

I know that youy all think I'm going to sell my method now and cash in, but I'm giving it away for fre and it is as simple as this:

- Eat less than what your body burns of calories each day and you'll loose weight.

No need for all the other crap.

24. that's not as simple as it sounds
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 08:06 PM by tpub
lots of people have very slow metabolisms and don't burn as many calories, even when they exercise.

In answer to the original question, I am officially considered overweight, but not obese. I have had blood sugar problems but they are all gone now that I've changed my diet. I'm 5'5" around 150 at home, 160 at the doctor's office (WHY, I'd like to know???)

On edit: loosing weight might be easy, but losing weight is not...

25. I've gained 35 pounds over the past three years
partly because my lifestyle took a turn toward the sedentry after I lost my landscaping job, and partly because my thyroid has begun acting up on me. I don't think it'll ever be easy to lose the weight because of the thyroid (they won't put me on medication just yet).

26. I did not think so (5' 6" at 163). However...
I had developed a very painful heel spur. My doc said to try losing some weight. I just cut down on portions, cut out lunch from time to time, and increased my exercise regime and lost about 15 pounds in two months. Voila! My heel spur no longer pains me! Of course, that did not hurt my blood pressure either. I am still grounded though, because of hypersensitivity to most of the B/P meds.

28. That depends who you ask
I'm plumper than I'm used to being, and I'm not entirely happy about it. Most people still describe me as being pretty small, and people are surprised that I weigh what I do (125). I guess I look smaller. All I see is that I can no longer wear a size 4, and in this society, that's something you're supposed to feel shitty about, I guess. What I really don't like is that I'm not all that fit anymore; I've gotten soft and sedentary, and I'm used to being really strong. I'm not strong anymore, and that bugs me a lot. Obviously, not enough to do something about it, though. I try to walk regularly, but I'm the world's laziest person.

My weight doesn't bother me that much, but it does bother me that I no longer have a tiny waist. Ever since I turned 40, I've been thickening in the middle; I guess that's Mother Nature's way of visually indicating "this one's no longer the best breeding prospect." Then again, I'm no longer flat-chested, so I guess being slightly plump has its advantages.

My feet hurt more these days, though, and that sucks.

able to squeeze into a size for. A thing called hips.
