Disgusting Food Combinations/Gastronomic Feats
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 02:08 AM by AlienGirl
What gastronomic feats have you performed? Either in terms of unusual food combinations, or huge amount of food consumed?

(In honor of what I just heard about the abominable sandwich-thing. Bleccch!)

1. Food, glorious food!
The sandwich thing was a discussion on one of Elvis' favorite treats- a loaf of bread filled with a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly, and a pound of bacon. Like two or three of those at a time.

25. Crispy bacon sandwich on toast with....
tomato preserves (once in awhile topped with a fried egg, and MAYBE some cheese too)

Also - bologna, jelly and potato chip sandwich (smash the lid down on the chips)...oh YES!

3. hmm...
as far as feats go....I ate a whole glob of chili powder paste crap, when I worked in a deli many years ago...for the oriental express, we grinded chili peppers, dried chili peppers, and added chili pepper paste, into this goop crap, that we used as a sorta breading for hotter oriental dishes....

We used chop sticks to stir this up, and a buddy of mine dared me to eat some, and I stuck a chop stick into the mess, and pulled it out and ate it...the goop, to me remided me of a corn dog, it was that well formed on the stick, and I cleaned the stick off...

Needless to say, I was messed up badly...I got ulcers from that stupidity. For a month afterwords, whenever I ate anything remotely hot, I would get pains on my sides, and spit up a bit of blood...:(

4. Wow, that's scary!
I used to eat Sriracha chili sauce on rye hardtack. After the radiation, I am a total spice wimp.

6. it was...scary
and very dumb...my friend really didn't bet me anything...all he said was, I bet you, that you won't eat that crap, and I did...so, I got nothing outta of it, except spending all my loose change money, on soda/milk/apple juice, to quench the fire in my gut...:)

5. When I worked at a movie theater a few years ago
A couple of my co-workers and I used to make crazy combinations of the different products in the concession area, fill up sample cups with them, and have chugging contests. Usually we started out having chugging contests with the juice left in the pickle jar (iced down), but got grosser as we went. The worst one was probably a mix of all the fountain drinks, pickle juice, popcorn salt, and a few pieces of candy and popcorn tossed in for flavor. Surprisingly, none of us ever became truly sick, but I did get a little queasy once from consuming too much pickle juice...

The bigger question is probably why we did this, and I still don't really know. I guess we just needed something to do during the downtime between shows!

8. I drank an entire bottle of this:

That's Crazy Ed's Cave Creek Chili Beer, which is a fancy phrase for "fire water". It's quite possibly the worst beer in the world, unless you REALLY like the taste of liquified hot pepper.

9. Is that the one with full pepper in the bottom?
Had that in Japan and paid about 10 dollars US to do so.

That was an odd night.

11. Yes, it is
I enjoy spicy foods, but this beer pushed my tolerance for heat. At least I didn't have to buy a 6-pack of the stuff.

14. Once While Preparing A Salad........
........I realized I was out of oil for the vinaigrette and too damned lazy to go out to buy some so I decided to substitute. I melted some lard in the microwave, added some lemon juice, garlic, and herbs and poured it over the salad. Bad idea. As soon as the vinaigrette hit the cold salad, the lard solidified into horrible chunks. My Mom, who was my dinner guest that night was stoic and actually ate it! She told me it was lovely.

18. I LOVE strange food combinations
I am not sure why...

I have been known to make MexiThai, Chinexican, and Thaitalian food before, and that is not even among my stranger ideas...

Salty and sweet, like popcorn and chocolate? YUM!!!

Sweet and spicy? YUM!!!

some things didn't work too well: BBQ Ice Cream was ok, but not very good.

Carrot ice cream was good, and bananas on pizza rocks (don't rule it out til you've tried it), especially with some hot peppers.

worst one based on ...uh... resulting feedback... was a tex mex omelet I made years ago with cabbage, beans, garlic, peppers, onions, salsa, etc... It tasted fine, but the resulting gas was HORRIBLE!! What was I thinking?!?

dang it, all this talk about food makes me want lunch now...

And he would stir it together. He swore it was delicious, but I never could get myself to try it.

26. When I eat grits, I put sugar in it.
For the non-grits-eating population, that's supposed to be an abomination. That's how my mother got me to eat them when I was a kid. She pretended like they were Cream of Wheat. I don't eat grits very often, but when I do, I put sugar in them. (Since I gave up sugar and corn, I won't be eating them again anytime soon.) People in the South look at me like I just told them to go fuck themselves when I do this in public. Even my husband gives me a look of disgust when he sees me put sugar in grits.

:hi:

I'm sort of a food purist, so I usually don't do weird things with my food. However, my husband does, and he has come up with some NASTY concoctions. :puke: He cooks with peanut butter, which is fine in some dishes, but it's NOT OK with rice. :scared:
