...and the 1977 Grammy for Best New Artist goes to... ....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Awards_of_1977

See them perform here 2 mintues and 50 seconds of Afternoon Delight :bounce:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX_bheJrdgM

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
a little afternoon delight.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Please be waiting for me baby when I come around.
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

2. Oh Yeah........
When that song was a big hit, my mom loved it but she thought it was about a couple enjoying a picnic! When I finally clued her into what it was really about, she casually dismissed the song as "dirty" and changed the radio station whenever it was played.

7. "best new artist" so often goes to "never to be heard from again
because they fuckin' suck, and even stupid pig ignorant America who loves shit won't remember these idiots in a year".

I'm not sure how the grammys do it, but they manage to constantly pick not the BEST new talent that will be long-lived because they're good, then tend to pick the biggest one hit wonders and give a grammy to a band that will never see a recording contract again.

9. They give that award to models . . . .
. . . who front for studio bands because America doesn't like their new performers over 30.

The Grammys have about as much credibility as a Cracker Jack prize.

11. Remember their variety show?
For you youngin's, back in the 70's, when a pop group had a big one-hit, they would get their own television show.

And one up and coming talent on the show was ... David Letterman, writing songs and comedy for The Starlight Vocal Band Show.

19. They're still not as bad as that other giant of 1977: Debbie Boone.
"You Light Up My Life" was criminally sentimental. "Afternoon Delight" is just a misdemeanor. :7

"You Light Up My Life" was the epitome of 70's pop bloat. I still dry heave when I think about that piece of dreck.

20. Frank Zappa once observed....
I paraphrase: Ever notice how one artist every year will win a lot of grammies (Santana, Whitney Houston)? They do that so the record industry will sell a lot of records.

22. One of the very first 45s I ever bought. The other was...
"Bohemian Rhapsody". I got them both at the local K mart at the same time.

I felt "cool" to actually be buying hit singles with my own allowance. And there began my musical education.
