I think I'm the only one who digs Ridley Scott's one and only foray into fantasy.
The theatrical cut of this movie was savaged by critics, yet upon watching the Director's cut, I swear I was viewing a different film. The odd rock music from Tangerine Dream was replaced with the orignal Jerry Goldsmith score. 25 minutes was added to it, and the film is much more involving now. Yeah, no one could confuse Legend with Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, but when this movie clicks, it's on fire.
I love how this movie is patterned after a masque, like Milton's Comus. The lack of three-dimensional characters was intentional on the writer's part; the three leads represent certain motifs. Jack is courage, Lili is innocence, Darkness is, err, malevolence.
For the most part, I think the movie works. The cinematography is luscious, the acting apropos, and the score beautiful. The seduction scene between Lili and Darkness is as good as any scene in a genre film--Curry radiates a kind of operatic majesty virtually unseen in other films.
Will anyone else fess up to enjoying Legend, whether it be the theatrical or director's cut?
