Is "celtic" properly pronounced as Seltic or Keltic?
I'm just sitting here listening to my Loreena McKennitt music collection, and I suddenly realized I don't know how to pronounce the word- I've heard it said both ways. Just curious.

2. That depends.
If you're talking about the basketball team that employed Larry Bird, the word starts with a c sound. In all other cases, it's a k sound.

5. Then why did they spell it with a "C" to begin with?
Bloody Irish...

7. Bloody Romans actually.

It comes from "Celtae" (from the Greek "Keltoi") and in classical Latin, all Cs were pronounced like Ks.

They called themselves the Gaels or the Cymri or the Armoricans (or others) depending on where they lived.

16. very true!
The famous phrase, Vini vidi vici, which most people pronounce as /vıni vıdi vitʃi/ (vinee videe veechee) should actually be said as /wini widi wiki/ (weenee weedee weekee).

6. As a general rule...
unless it's a sports team, it's Keltic. The sports teams being Boston and a football club somewhere in the UK.

Incidentally, I, too, am sitting here listening to my Loreena McKennitt collection. :toast:

30. The "football club somewhere in the UK" is Glasgow Celtic.
Originally started by Irish Catholics living in Glasgow. The Glasgow Rangers have strong Protestant roots--strengthened by immigrants from Belfast.

Yes, the fans have been known to disagree from time to time. Here's a humorous look at the rivalry: http://rangersfansvcelticfans.com/

Pronounced "Glasgow Seltic"--as you said.
