Question About Pirates of the Caribean Dead Man's Chest ending
**********************SPOILER*************************

If you HAVE NOT Seen the movie stop here!

Okay, at the very end we see Barbosa ( Geoffrey Rush ) come down the stairs. Didn't he die in the original? I know I'm going to have see the original again beofre I see Pirates for a second time in the theatre, but was just curious if I was wrong.

1. Eh. They need something for the next movie.
They kind of painted themselves into a corner with the supernatural theme. They've done ghost pirates. They've done sea monsters. What's next?

Better consult William Hope Hodgson and just recycle a plot.

2. Thats what I thought
In the first movie he was cursed. He couldn't die. But didn't Jack Sparrow stab him just as the last coin was put into the chest? Everyone became mortal again including those two clowns who are in the sequal. The monkey saved a coin, so thats why HE is a skelton under a full moon. However, this does not explain why Barbosa is alive. I LOVED both movies but thought this was a major flub.I honestly thought when we saw the boots coming down the stairs it was gonna be Keith Richards in Pirate attire holding onto a bottle of rum doing his best Jonny Depp saying 'Lets go get jack, Mate!' I think that would have been way cool!

3. I think they call this "ret-conning"
in the comic book world. That is, kill a major character and then bring him back a couple of issues later.

I'm sure they'll have some convenient excuse in the next movie. Either the audience won't care, or they'll bitch about it but still show up at the box office anyway.

Not really important for a movie like this.

4. I've been thinking about this.
I think Barbosa is going to be shown to have made some kind of deal/spell/curse with the voodoo lady. :)

6. I think you're probably right...
and let's face it, you've got to suspend an awful lot of disbelief with these movies anyway, so why not bring back a dead character? In fact, bringing back a dead character could be seen as foreshadowing that Sparrow, too, can be brought back from the dead.

I'm also looking forward to the third, though I was a bit disappointed with the second -- I felt like it was 2 1/2 hours that just set up the next movie.

10. Johnny Depp is awesome
If you have not already, I strongly suggest seeing Sleepy Hollow and From Hell, both great Depp performances.

24. She did say
they could bring back Jack, they just needed someone that could navigate their way, why couldn't Barbosa have come back as well? We know that Jack got the compass from her, so why shouldn't Barbosa have known her too?

8. Bullet through the heart. It was the central climax the movie had built to
Is that the only supernatural point you noticed? Didn't wonder about starfishes stuck to the faces of undead fathers, or a heart beating in a locked chest for decades or centuries?

They killed Jack, so they needed another great actor for a captain. The only reason people weren't gushing over Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa was because Johnny Depp was just better. But Rush was brilliant in the first one, too. In some ways, his acting was much better. More dimensional. I like Depp, but he's often little more than a very skilled character actor. Rush adds much more depth to his characters. IMHO.

9. And did anyone else notice how much this mimiced "The Empire Strikes Back"
Orlando Bloom is the young figther in training, like Luke Skywalker. Jack Sparrow is the craft pirate, Han Solo. Elizabeth Swann, the beautiful princess who falls in love with the idealistic young dreamer but can't control he hormonal curiosity for the rogue scoundrel? Darth Vader takes on two characters in the Pirates series--first, Barbosa, then Davie Jones. Small band of rebels takes on the monolithic empire (in this case, the East India Trading Company?)

The whole father/sister/brother thing hasn't happened. Yet. But let's see who Elizabeth winds up with in the end. Personally, I kept thinking Will needed to hook up with Naomie Harris's character. But by the end of the film I had an unhealthy obsession with Naomie Harris's character, so maybe that entered into it.

14. I saw the end of the credits
Maybe the dog becomes the hero? I loved it! By the way, I suggest everyone go back & watch the very end of the credits of the 1st Pirates. Kind of a clue I thought forshadowing the sequal.

17. At the end of the 1st movie
We see the monkey take a coin & nturn into a skelton. This is why so many people didn't understand how the monkey was skelton in the sequal. At the end of the first movie the curse was broken. I wish they wouldn't put major plot lines like that when they know most people have left the theatre.

22. Yeah
It was just a few seconds of the dog sitting on the throne with a big bone in it's mouth. The theater I saw it in (opening night) was packed and only about a dozen people stayed but it still got a decent laugh.
