Burning my first java log in the fireplace
Plan to tonight or tomorrow a.m., when it snows here in New Jersey.

I first heard about these fireplace logs, made from recycled coffee grounds, when I went to Whole Foods. The java log people had some customer relations people in front of the store telling incoming grocery store customers about the new type of fire log, which comes to us from Canada.

I almost bought some but decided to ask the fireplace meister (AKA husband) about them first. He said to get some, so I did.

The main selling advantage, it seems, is that they burn three-four hours and they burn brighter and put out 25% more heat. They put out less pollution than wood. But best of all for me is that the fire will get going on the first try. I can never get a wood fire started.

Has anyone else tried these logs? Did you experience a slight coffee aroma in the house from them?

2. Where do they get recycled coffee grounds?
That seems kind of weird.

3. Never heard of them before, so I googled, and found this

(snip)

What do they smell like?

Java-Logs have a faint sweet scent arising from the mixture of molasses and coffee. Most people don't smell anything while others smell a faint sweet coffee aroma - no chemical scent.

4. Slightly OT,
But in The Tightwad Gazette, by Amy Dacyczyn, she describes how a newspaper can be twisted so that it puts out more heat. Sounded kinda interesting.

5. report on the java log
Burned a java log this a.m. I didn't burn it last night because I cleaned a big paper bag of wood ashes out of the fireplace and that was so much work I was warmed up from the job so who needed a fire!?

Burned the log this a.m. while the snow was coming down. Nice. The Java log hardly left ash. Thus they would be less maintenance and less work than constantly putting in new wood logs. Also, they are nice and clean and in a brown paper wrapper which is easy to light and get going.

I forgot to turn the handle on the fireplace, though, and while I didn't see the smoke, the place filled up with something that gave me a headache. I did eventually "wake up and smell the coffee," though, so I opened the fireplace handle and the headache went away.

Wonk, that's a link to the log I bought.

The "product" link tells what the advantages are. Also, they were right about it burning brighter and hotter. It did last exactly three hours, maybe a little more.

I didn't notice a coffee aroma but maybe I would if I left the house and walked back in.

It's out now but I have a whole case of them (paid around $20 for a case of six) so I'll burn another one if the snow keeps up.
