I ate haggis this weekend!
I was at the Celtic Fling rennisance festival and, well, my girlfriend and I just couldn't resist the challenge. And you know what?

It was good. :9 Basically a liver pudding. I'd eat it again!

2. Ick.
Even if I wasn't a vegetarian I don't think I could eat that. Sorry.

I'm glad you liked it thought. :)

3. There's a vegan version at Food Fight.
I have no idea what it tastes like though. :scared:

4. Why would anyone make a vegan version of this?
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 03:11 PM by ThomCat
I can't imagine there's a big market for this.

Very :scared: indeed.

5. Gag gifts?
I mean, we need something to leave on people's doorsteps as a prank, and fish heads are right out.

8. I've always thought the standard Tofurkey
looked sort of like a haggis. If I ever have any money again, I'm going to buy myself one of those and a bottle of Laphroaig and then sit down and read a bunch of Robert Burns poems while I eat my Tofaggis and get drunk.

9. The roast thing with the rice-based stuffing
I guess it sort of does. Really it only exists as an excuse to eat that really good gravy, I think.

15. I think there is one in the Moosewood cookbook too
I saw it somewhere Sunday while looking for new recipes and that is the only vegetarian book I have.

7. I liked it.
When I was in Scotland, I had some haggis, neeps and tatties. If anyone doesn't want their haggis, I'll swap my neeps for it.

20. Are those the turnips?
Are those any good? I like turnip greens but I can't recall if I've never eaten the whole turnip before.

10. Mike Myers said it best...
...in So I Married and Ax Murderer

"..Scottish food is based on a dare"

I would add that for Irish cuisine also.

13. What kind of liver?
I could probably deal with chicken; but beef liver send shivers down my spine to think of it...

17. Traditionally sheep's liver, heart and lungs
Boiled with barley in a sheep's stomach. However, most 'commerical' haggis isn't made with the stomach and is rather made with commercial sausage casing. I also believe you can't serve sheep's lungs in the US. What I had was probably just the liver and heart.

22. I thought it was pretty mild
Definitely tasted of liver but also of onions and other spices. It was all ground up pretty well. I don't think heart has much flavor--those were just the slightly less mushy bits, I believe.

Just for you, I've uploaded a picture of the haggis! This is my girlfriend, holding it cautiously before the initial bite.

14. Liver, onions, and oatmeal...
boiled up in a sheep's stomach. Along with other secret ingredients handed down for hundreds of years that most experts believe have something to do with 16th century garbage disposal problems. Not all that bad, though.

I remember ordering it at a restaurant in Edinnburgh, and the waitress gave me the strangest look. Earlier, when asking the locals where I could get somne Scottish home cooking, one just said "Yer mad! We dinna eat that shit-- we go to the Chinese place down the street."

It's Scottish fruitcake-- necessary for celebrations and offered with great ceremony, but eaten? Unlike fruitcake, however, you can't save it for a year and give it to someone else.

Chopped liver? Mmm!
Vienna sausages? I'll eat the whole can!

And no, there's nothing wrong with my sense of taste or smell! :D
