13. Dad got his while he worked for the state dept of education.
One of the schools he was supervising teachers in was closing, and he asked if the clock was for sale. They were gonna give it to him, but he insisted that it had to be a sales transaction. They "sold" it to him for exactly $1. :)

I love the sound of the pendulum, especially late at night. It's so comforting.

How cool that you have one, too!

35. That's a great looking clock.
I've got a clock in every room of the house, except the bathrooms.

I wanted to get a wall clock similar to that, but I never found one that suited my taste or was within my budget.

But, I wound up inheriting my grandparents bell clock, the one they were given when they were married in 1925.

It didn't run right, though.
It lost a few minutes each day.

I complained once when I was visitng them about 25 years ago that their clock didn't keep time very well. It would always strike the hour about 5 minutes after whatever tv show we were watching at the time had started. It drove me nuts.

So, my grandfather told me that since the clock didn't work very well, he asked me if I could take a look at it. So, one day I took off the back panel to have a look at it, and I asked him about the inside workings because they certainly didn't look they had been ticking away for 55+ years. They were all nice and shiny, with very little grease or dirt of any kind on any of the gears.

That was when my grandfather told me that he had taken it to a clock shop to have it fixed a few years before, and he suspected that the guy had gutted the clock, took all of the original machine parts out, and rigged it up to where it kept time.

I was pretty bummed out about it.
I told my grandfather that taking out the original parts of the clock wasn't right.

But my grandfather said that he didn't feel too bad about it because the clock no longer ran when he took it to the clock shop anyway, and since it only lost 3 minutes a day, and it only had to be wound once a week, it wasn't so bad.

Then, 8 years later he died, and the family gave that clock to my mother to give to me because grandfather said none of the other grandchildren showed any interest in fixing that clock.

So, I took it a jeweler here that I have known for years and asked him if he could get it to run right, and he had it fixed in just 2 days. When I went to pick it up, he told me that he had to replace the metal strip that held the counterweight, and the counterweight itself because he didn't know why they had used that particular counterweight to cause it to swing to keep the gears running because it was so heavy. Which was what wore out the metal strip so fast to begin with, and also caused it lose 3 minutes a day.

But, after I told him the story about the clock shop my grandfather had taken it to, and that the guy there had probably gutted the clock, the jeweler assured me that all the machine parts were the original parts of that particular kind of clock, except for the counterweight; that the fellow in the clock shop had just taken the parts out of the clock and cleaned and buffed them, which is why they looked so new when I had looked at them years before.

I was stunned.

Then, he gave me the counterweight and it turned out to an old broach pin of some kind. I showed it to my mother and she thought she recognized it. So, a few days later she dug out some old photos of her parents and it turned out to be a broach pin her grandmother wore on her fancy dress whenever they posed for pictures. There's only 2 pictures of her grandmother in all of the family pictures because she was shy.

So, why my grandfather was using his mother-in-law's broach pin to run that clock, I just couldn't figure out.

Then I realized that it was my grandfather who had lost the original counterweight to that clock - he was the one that screwed that clock up from keeping the right time to begin with, but he couldn't let it get out to my grandmother that he was the one that had broken their wedding clock present!

That's why grandfather took it to get it fixed at a clock shop - so he could blame it on the clock shop owner!

Clever guy, my grandfather.

Their clock runs like a champ now too.

but now it's just a clock/weatherstation on the wall in the kitchen.

But since Switzerland's train station clocks are famous, you can buy them both as wall or ceiling mounted:

43. I love my wall clock
We have 9 other clocks around the house. They all say something different and it drives me crazy!

Havocdad has all these formulas for how to figure the ACTUAL TIME depending on which clock one looks at. When I look at the clock in the middle of the night, I just wanna know how much sleep I can still get. I DO NOT WANNA DO MATH!

So I got me a decent wall clock... with Roman Numerals. He has trouble figuring that particular numbering system out at a glance.

Sauce for the goose, good for the gander. ;)
