Worst trade in Baseball History? Starting to look like it...
Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 11:39 AM by SaveElmer
Twins trade A.J. Pierczynsky to the Giants for:

Joe Nathan - Now one of the premier closers in the game

Boof Bonser - Now in the starting rotation

and

Francisco Liriano - Age 22, 7-1 2.16 ERA, beat the Rocket in his return game. Future superstar, who opposing hitters are saying has some of the best stuff of anyone they have seen.

Don't remember who the Giant GM was that pulled off that trade, but they could go down in history as the answer to the trivia question, "Who executed the worst trade in Baseball History?"

2. A sale not a trade....
Ruth was sold (and Fenway Park mortgaged) to the Yankees so Red Sox owner Harry Frazee could get the dough to put on "No No Nanette" on Broadway....

3. Don't forget Ernie Broglio for Lou Brock, even up
Or Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas....

Does seem like the Twins pulled off a heist there, though....

4. As a West Coast baseball fan, I'd throw in two others

The Mariners decision to trade Randy "The Big Unit" Johnson to the Diamondbacks in exchange for...well, no one anyone can remember.

And Charlie Finley's decision as owner of the A's in the 1970's to trade Reggie Jackson and Jim(Catfish)Hunter to the Yankees in exchange for...years of pointless misery, mainly.

In non-West Coast trades, there's also the decision of the owner of the mid 90's Florida Marlins to trade away most of his World Series-winning team just to punish the fans for not voting to give him an insanely expensive new stadium. No one can do that and still say they're in baseball out of love of the game.

6. As a lifelong Cubs fan, thanks to my Mother, I have to agree with you.
Everytime Mom took me and my brother up to Wrigley in the mid-to-late 1960's to watch a Cubs-Cards series, Lou Brock would always seem to get "great appreciation" out of stealing second base, third base and even home base on the Cubs...

Worst Trade Ever.......

7. Worst. Trade. Ever.
In 1991, my Orioles traded Pete Harnish, Curt Schilling and Steve Finley to the Houston Astros for Glenn Davis.
Here are their stats after the trade

Davis played in only 185 games over three injury plagued years before retiring 687 AB .247Avg. 24 HRs 85 RBI's

Pete Harnish made the NL All-Star team once pitched 10 seasons 106-81 with 3.89 ERA

Curt Shilling six time All-Star started this season with career record of 191-131 with 3.40 ERA

Steve Finley two time All-Star six time Gold Glove winner started this season with career total of 297 HRs 1125 RBI's and 313 SBs and career batting avg. .273
