Matt Damon as Captain James T. Kirk?

Damon tipped for Captain Kirk role

Hollywood star Matt Damon is apparently the current favourite to play the role of Captain James T. Kirk in 'Lost' director J.J Abrams' upcoming 'Star Trek' blockbuster.

According to sources, Damon will play a younger incarnation of the star and Abrams has apparently already received the blessing of original Kirk star Bill Shatner for the 'Bourne Supremacy' star to fill his shoes with the role.

1. They're actually making another Star Trek movie?
x( :banghead:

I'm sorry, it's time to put Trek to rest. IMO, it's gotten to the point where the confines of the universe they've built no longer allows for originality without violating canon or continuity so they have to resort to dead horse trope.

However, if Abrams can put just a little of his Lost charm into this one, I may have to modify my opinion.

8. I thought the same until I saw who was making it.
I'm a Lost addict, and am of the opinion that it's one of the few truly unique TV shows in the past decade...and certainly the first successful one. If he can bring some of the same suspense to Trek, it may reinvigorate the franchise.

Trek suffers from two problems. First, Trek abandoned the original vision of Roddenberry after he died. Utopian ideals of a peaceful future went out the window in favor of space combat. The problem is that TV is FULL of space combat, and some of their competition is far better at it than they were. Secondly, they keep rehashing the SAME BORING PLOTLINES over and over and over and over and over and over and over. When you watch a BRAND NEW EPISODE, recognize the plotline 1 minute in, and instantly know how the episode is going to end, you KNOW there are serious problems with the show. That happened to me with both Voyager and Enterprise.

If Abrams can pump an interesting storyline into the movie (something beyond "enemy x is going to kill the human race, we must annihilate it") and develop some ideas that haven't been tried before, I could easily become a Trekkie again. I quit trying when I realized that I looked forward to Trek night the same way I look forward to mowing the lawn..."Is it that day of the week again?"

2. What? How old is Damon?
Shatner was 35 when he started playing Kirk, so how old is Matt Damon? If they are planning to do a "Starfleet Academy" plot, then Damon is already too old.

3. at least they are thinking about younger actors
As much as I love them, the last original cast was just way to old to have been playing those roles

It was a severe bout of an especially nasty Saurian venereal diesease he contracted in 2257 that permanently messed up his nervous system.

19. Hmm. As a Trek fan, I don't seem to mind this casting.
I'd prefer a lesser-known actor, but I have no bitch with Damon as Kirk. I quite like him to be honest.

I love J.J. Abrams' work, but a Matt Damon version would be craptacular.
