Why is Jennifer Anniston on the cover of every magazine in America?
Don't get me wrong--she's a lovely lady, and somewhat talented. I rather enjoyed "Rumor Has It", though I might have been the only one in America who did. But it seems to me we have an example of what might be called disproportionate attention being paid here...exactly what has she done to become this mega-celebrity?

1. I don't get her popularity
She isn't cute, she can't act, and has no discernible personality.

2. Exactly
I never liked her in "Friends", and I cannot for the life of me figure out why she is so popular.

3. I chalk up her mega-star status to being dumped by Brad Pitt.
It's the ol' poor Jen routine.

15. Yep, and Vince Vaughn knows a valuable commodity when he sees it.
Will they last past the DVDE release?

Yeah, right...

5. Good publicist
And half the magazines are owned by the company that makes the movie, that produces the celeb-gossip TV shows, that publishes the newspapers with the gossip columns, that owns the celebrity radio talk shows...it all feeds on itself.

19. You are absolute correct about the interrelated corporate connections...

that drive modern celebrity culture. They refer to it "synergy", but I just call it bull$hit to distract the rubes.

7. I think young women identify with her
and would like to look like her. She seems (I guess) both glamorous and like the girl next door, somehow. That apparently sells magazines.

8. I don't know...the cover of my People has that Taylor guy on it
from American Idol, and my Family Fun magazine has an unnamed child...and I haven't even looked at my "Good Old Days" magazine to know what's painted on its cover. :P

10. Because in order to sell copies of magazines
Magazines have to dramatize life into a story. Everything has to have a villain, and a moral, and all the usual tropes of a hack screenwriter. They've made out Jennifer to be the poor, cheated-upon waif, victim of the even Brangelina monster. Much ink was spilled in the course of making this story. Jennifer, who is soon to have a backlash, had a subplot going of denying poor Brad a child, which is supposedly why he fled to the arms of Angelina. I wouldn't rent this crap from Netflix.

11. Money.
Remember the Eddie Fisher and Liz Taylor and Debbie Reynolds story? The rags milked that one for years, even after all the parties were split with each other and on to new stuff. Even a few years ago Liz and Debbie were in a tv special together and it ignited the rivalry stories all over again. I'm afraid there is enough ammo in this story for the life time of the participants, as long as they remain fairly popular celebrities.

13. Good publicist and manager
She also grew up in the system (I think her dad was/is on Days of Our Lives or some other soap). She knows how the game is played.
