I want to make something perfectly clear: Bluegrass music is NOT
country music.

Some guy at work came by and heard me listening to a bluegrass station on SHOUT and told me that was the music they play in Texas. I told him no, it was from the Carolinas.

They voted for Bush

I don't care. Bluegrass was around long before they were. You need to get out of this hick county and see the rest of the country.

You're a closet republican.

Just shove it, will you. Good lord.

He should've been around this morning when I was listening to Bach. I listen to all kinds of music expect christian rock. Pretty soon I might switch to KROQ or some alternative 80's. But for now I'm gonna listen to this just to get his goat.

Some people are so clueless.

1. Just out of curiosity...
What does not knowing the difference between country and bluegrass have to do with politics?

2. Search me.
He even thinks if you eat peanuts you're a republican. He likes to yell at people over the intercom without bothering to call first. I don't think the guy's been out of the county, much less any other part of the world or USA.

5. One of Mozart's compositions
comes very close to Blue Grass. IMHO.

From what I understand Blue Grass pretty much derived from Scottish settlers in the Carolinas.

I knew some shrimper-men from coastal NC who were well into the Clogging/Scottish jigs/ Spoon playing. It was fun watching them in the evenings at our bar room/pool hall.

6. You'd think he might know something
after all he's got a Scottish last name. And I am from the Blue Ridge mountians and my dad could sure pluck a mean banjo and my mom played the piano.

8. Mozart?
Scottish last name?

I have been up that way, Blue Ridge. Luray Caverns-Skyway Drive-Gold Hill, North Carolina, Look Out Mountain, Tenn.

Beautiful country.

Panned for gold at Gold Hill.

12. Read my post about that whole musical style having its genesis in the
court music of Louis Quatorze.

The pieces will fall into place.

9. Well... it is a form of country music
It sprung from country music but it concentrated more on the swapping of instruments for the melodies.

11. Let me clarify: bluegrass "sprung from" what was called String Band music
in the 1920s; as you said, the difference is that in String Band music, everybody plays lead all the time, and with bluegrass, they swap leads.

10. Astonishing where you find bluegrass. I once interviewed a guy
who wanted the fiddle-playing job in our bluegrass / Irish band, and he was from ITALY! Turns out that the music in certain areas of northerf Italy is an awful lot like bluegrass / Scots / Irish music (at least instrumentally), and if you research further you can find the roots of a lot of it in the court music of Louis the 14th...
