Love, Instinct or Alchemy

They say that some animals can
Instinctually smell fear, sense even
A brief capitulation or an intrinsic
Weakness in their doomed adversary,
And then taking full advantage
Of that moment of total vulnerability,
Move in swiftly to complete the kill.

Is that what it was when the two of us met?

Could we smell the mutual anxiety
Of being alone, the musky perfume
Of emotional despair, icy dread
Swirling about us, encircling our raw
Wounded selves, a belligerent bouquet
Oozing out from our eye sockets and loins.
Instead of being apprehensive and suspicious,
Were we drawn to that acutely familiar scent?

Or perhaps we were just moving toward
Each other with such kinetic force,
That when we finally collided with a kiss
We exploded upon contact, a chemical
Reaction turning everything that we believed
Into something utterly changed, different;
Lead into gold, sand into diamonds, fear into love,
And love into an entirely new element
Whose properties resemble absolutely nothing,
Nothing that we had ever before suffered.

14. That's a powerful poem

that sings of powerful feelings....

It's been a long time since I felt that way about someone. This poem makes me lonesome for that feeling.
