Report it missing and get a new one, of course.

:argh:

(My SO's, not mine, and he has the insurance on it for a reason. Still.)

1. That happened to me with a wallet.
It fell out of my bag on the bus. I realized it as soon as the bus pulled away. I called the bus company as soon as I got into the office because I knew that bus was heading toward the terminal two stops after mine (with virtually no passengers at that point) but they could not have been any LESS helpful.

So I cancelled my credit cards, got a new work ID, and took the next afternoon off so I could go get a new license.

The next day I planned to leave at noon, stop at home to eat lunch, then take the train downtown to the DMV. I ended up getting stuck at work so I headed straight downtown to make it before the DMV closed.

When I got home after getting my new license, what was in my mailbox but MY WALLET. Complete with all the cards, my license and even ALL my cash. If I had only stopped at home like I had planned I wouldn't have had to waste time and money getting a new license. Still, I thank the anonymous good samaritan who returned it to me. It was much nicer knowing that someone wasn't out there getting a new identity with my information.

2. That happened last year with my wallet, too.
I lost it somewhere in Madison on a Sunday -- cancelled the credit cards, got a new ID, all that. I had the added dimension of a recent divorce and name change, and a week-from-then flight. I even called the airline to find out what would happen if I got a new driver's license with my maiden name (the flight was booked in my married name); they told me to bring my divorce decree and I'd be OK.

My wallet turned up Monday evening at a movie theater we'd visited. Everything intact. I used my old driver's license to get on the plane, and all was well.
