A new born Egyptian tortoise sits on the finger of its keeper at Chester Zoo, north west England, May 23, 2006. The zoo has hatched six of the tortoises also known as Testudo Kleinmanni, which are currently on the critically endangered list.

8. That inter-species thing is something that really *should* be explored.
I'm amazed at how uptight people can still be in this day and age.

16. You know, we *all* think this is a problem you'll have to choose to deal
with on your own level; that being said... I'll leave you with this:

Just down the street from you in a small white house on wednesday nights at 7pm, there is a group of people you should meet.

They welcome everyone, it's anonymous and donations aren't required but are always appreciated.

You'll find friends there. Friends of BTs.

It's called BTA, and they can help you... no judgements.

10. Sulcata?
I saw an ad for someone giving away a baby around here with a 75g tank. The guy claimed it would be big enough for an adult...

That's just as fucked up as the petshops that sell baby arowanas and pacus saying they need a 55g. Pacus are basically a 30" vegetarian pirhana and arowanas get to be a good 3'.

19. thats him...
our dude has a whole backyard to play in. If we didnt live in Arizona we would have to do UV lights on him for hours a day but he gets all of that on his own.

And then poops human size poo all over the place, hes a monster.

20. If I owned a house in the desert, I'd get one.
I love land turtles. Well, I like water ones too, but prefer the land ones. I had a box turtle that lived outside for a few years. We think a bear got to him. There was a bear in the yard and he ripped the whole pen out of the ground. Never saw the turtle again. We weren't home. That's just what the neighbors reported.

23. New Jersey. We get bears all the time.
More so at this house, than at the last one (which is where the bear incident occured though). They're black bears. They don't bother people or dogs, but they will go after small pets outside. Or llamas. A couple llamas down the road were killed by a bear.

17. Wee little cutie
I "adopted" a California desert tortise for four years when I was a student in Placentia. A science professor had an inroad with a tortise rescue facility and the most responsible students in the class were allowed to adopt a clutch of nearly 200 baby tortises provided the turtles would be returned to the tortise rescue for regular checkups and/or if they couldn't provide for the tortii any longer.

My cat ate it.

Just kidding. ;) I had "digger" for four years, and he (I think it was a he, who knows) enjoyed eating lots of strawberries, ice plant, wild grass, and vitamin enriched mixed green salads every day.

They grow so slowly, it's a wonder any of them live to maturity.
