21. Why I loathe IMHO
First, no one should be humble about their opinions. Be BOLD. :D

Second, though I am sure YOU mean it when being humble, it always smacks of "I am being falsely modest as to take the edge off of what was a very blunt opinion!" hehe

I think I will start using my own creation (at least I have never seen it): IMNSHO - In My Not So Humble Opinion! :bounce:

28. Many. It's one of my pet peeves in reading the assorted writings
of my students that so many employ useless subphrases which serve only to take the power out of their messages.

One my least favourites is the apositional "First off." One can pretty much remove that phrase from any sentence or paragraph it starts without damaging the flow of information in any way. The only element it imparts is an understood air of combatative nature. When someone starts their statements with "First off," it's likely what follows will be an argument to someone else's statement.

Broadcasting one's arguments is poor etiquette and worse strategy. Make your case and leave it at that.

Another I dislike having to see is "at the end of the day." Particularly as this phrase seems to crop up several times in a paper with several ends to several days, and it leaves me unsure of whose calendar I should be using. Overuse of trite phrasing always distracts from the point one is attempting to make.

"Suffice it to say," for some reason never seems sufficient. It shouldn't precede a 7-paragraph rant unless one is hoping to give the impression of being unaware of it's meaning.

Just a random sampling. *sigh*

34. I share many of those
I kick myself when I find myself using them - I think it's a bleed-off from reading GD too much.

First off, if I DO use those phrases, it is because a Rove operative planted those memes in my brain, so I utilized a pro-active reply which showed I was thinking outside the box! At the end of the day, suffice to say, I won every argument on DU. :evilgrin:

on this "planet"....Gawd, I hate that one.

bottom line :puke:

downsizing - Hello? It's called lay-offs.

outsourcing - Jobs sent overseas.

dialoguing - It's NOT a verb.

human resources - It's the personnel department

and "like" I watched the show and "like".... - hate this, but admit
to be guilty of using it. (now I hate myself...this isn't good).

amazing - overused and saying it means you are cool

With due respect - going in for the kill. (why bother?)

Results-oriented - GOP-speak for "Win at all costs; the ends justify the means."

Team player - no, pal, it's known as a mindless, unthinking suckup!

And some misused words/nonwords:

Preventative - it's preventive, stupid!
Febuary - in case you forgot your schooling, the second month of the year is spelled--and pronounced February!

55. YES! What's with the "no problem" epidemic???
I hear this all the time.

My wife and I have a standing game going with ourselves at a particular restaurant we frequent. A waitress there is prone to use the "no problem" response, so we make a point of verbally thanking her as much as possible, just to run up the score of "no problems."

So far, our record is 13 "no problem" responses during one meal.

Research continues in the laboratory.

It's one of the dumbest phrases out there. It's just filler -- it is *always* "this particular point in time" -- when else would it be? There's just no need to say it at all.

Also, "at the end of the day" bugs me greatly. I used to think that "the bottom line is" was bad, but "at the end of the day" aggravates me no end!

when on tv.

Others:
* "I'm the king of the world!" My God, that line was in one fucking movie, now it's all over the fucking tv. ARGH!!!
* "Like"
* "Whatever"
* "Ask me anything."
* "Compassionate Conservative"

77. "At the end of the day..."
When I hear someone use that term, I just wanna shout "At the end of the day comes night, dumbass! That's all!"

Others?

Extreme anything
Ultra anything
Radical anything
metrosexual
info-tainment
"Let's re-visit this decision."
"downsize" or "right-size"
"liberal media" (Kiss My Liberal Ass = kmla)

That's all for now.

And also, if you hear the word "frankly" come out of the mouth of just about any politician you know the words that follow will be nothing but lies.
