Dear DU yogurt experts: HELP!
The OR family is trying to eliminate high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) from our diet. Ms. OR was just at the grocery store and could not find flavored yogurt for her or the child without HFCS. Ms. OR is a vegitarian, and the little OR does not eat much meat and yogurt is a staple.

Who makes yogurt without HFCS? Where to find?

1. Yobaby
doesn't have any, and neither does Stonyfield Farms soy yogurt. (I'm not sure about their regular though, my older kid has a dairy allergy.)

Our grocery has both in their organic section.

2. Make your own. It's not hard. Get good starter culture
and a yogurt maker. Use fruit or jam to flavor. More choices regarding sweeteners with jams than commercially made yogurts. By making it yourself, save money, lose gelatin thickeners and get benefit of higher grade live cultures.

If you don't wanna make it, check selection at local health food stores.

4. They have a carb freedom kind with splenda...
I don't understand why they feel that fruit isn't enough of a sweetener. And then they put in coloring to make it bright pink. It tastes good, but the coloring just turns me off. I'm a big fan of yoplait, but they put the HFCS in that too, and I can't have that. Target has a sugar free yogart as well. Archer Farms brand. It also has splenda and is colored strangely.

5. You could look at Mountain High brand.
I *think* I remember that they sweeten with fructose and don't use gelatin (many yogurts use it, and aren't vegetarian.)

Good luck!

8. Yoplait light yogurt (in the blue cups)
Edited on Sat May-20-06 07:47 PM by DinoBoy
is fat free and "sugar free." Meaning it uses nutrasweet or possibly splenda. A word of warning: it tastes..... odd.

ON EDIT: It's of course not entirely sugar free. There's plenty of sugar in the fruit, but the added sweetener is artificial.

18. Oh nevermind, I was wrong
Their packages have this goofy red and white logo I took to be the nutrisweet pinwheel, but it's really for live acidophilis cultures. Their packages also have the Splenda logo. But there is HFCS in the ingredients list...

9. Gotta look at the health food store more than likely
It's hard to find HFCS-free stuff at conventional grocers.

10. Go organic.
Stonyfield farms, Brown Cow, etc. Also, organic dairy is so much healthier. The hormones in non-organic milk are especially harmful for women and children. It costs more, but I really think it's worth it.

Personally, I don't like yogurt. The only kind I like is the Stonyfield Farms Lowfat Caramel and the WholeSoy Apricot Mango.

13. Dannon All Natural Plain Yogurt
has no HFCS - only ingredient is milk. My husband has this in his lunch every day, mixed with real maple syrup (yum!) or homemade freezer jam (fruit, sugar and pectin). Very easy and you can control portions. I buy the yogurt in quarts and send a 1/2 cup reusable container - no pile of yogurt cups.

14. We have almost completely eliminated HFCS from our diet
it's not that hard...but, make sure you buy organic ketchup---and Pure Maple syrup. BTW--I eat the Yo Baby stuff.

Smart move, and good luck with that.

15. I buy plain yoghurt (organic) and add fruit
either frozen or fresh (in season).

Fruited yoghurts are all high in sugar anyway (I live in Canada, and don't find the HCFS as prevalent here) Nonetheless, the sugar content is incredibly high. Plain also has more acidophilus in it than the flavoured kind.

17. I buy plain
and add whatever flavoring I'm in the mood for...usually fruit (bananas, blueberries, apples) or granola (which I make myself)

Sometimes nuts, a cup of yogurt with walnuts or cashews is a nice snack.

21. Breyer's light lowfat yogurt
Unless HFCS is written in code language that I overlooked, it is not on the label of ingredients. I bought the cherry yogurt and I think it tastes good.
