Da Vinci’ critics crack the Code: It stinks
By Stephen Schaefer
Tuesday, May 16, 2006 - Updated: 09:06 PM EST

CANNES, France - It may be the buzz movie of the season, but most of the buzz was bad last night when “The Da Vinci Code” premiered for an audience of journalists and VIPs at the opening of the 59th Cannes Film Festival.

Ron Howard’s $125 million adaptation of Dan Brown’s controversial bestseller was shrouded in secrecy until yesterday’s screenings here and in Paris, London, New York and Los Angeles.

Maybe Columbia Pictures was worried about the reaction. It’s not a good sign when your film’s big revelatory moment is greeted with laughter. “It’s not really interesting,” groused one critic leaving the theater here. “The plot is in some ways ridiculous and the laughter was justified.”

- snip -

“It seems even more ridiculous on the screen than in the book. It’s just awful. If I were Tom Hanks I’d be hanging my head in shame.”

“Ridiculous. Tom and Audrey - it doesn’t work. She can’t do it in English.”

1. Rotten Tomatoes: Big Green Splats for Da Vinci Code.
Only 5 reviews are up, but NONE of them are positive.

3. Hey, they panned Battlefield Earth, too...
But time has proven the Psychlos the wiser. hasn't it?

"Puny Man-Animal! Just TRY getting some leverage over Ron Howard!"

Anyways, I still wanna see the DaVinci Code, just so's I can check out for myself just how badly they fucked up "Holy Blood, Holy Grail."

4. I will still go see it
Let's face it. How many are the good movies in a year? A couple at most. I mean movies that you'll always remember.

Sure this won't be one of them, sure it won't get any Oscar nominations but still - it will be a decent movie.

5. Me too - I like Hanks and Howard
And it's fantasy for Cripe's sake - a chance to take your mind out of gear and relax. I'd take the DVC over MI III any time.

7. And that's what I'm afraid of, giving that hack Howard the reins
I had a gut feelig that the film, like everything he touches, would turn into shallow, uncreative schlock. Especially given the shallow (though impossible to put down) book on which it is based.
