What music are you listening to?
Edited on Sun May-14-06 03:44 PM by mvd
I've listed to these that I just got for my birthday:

Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood (different, but very satisfying! Could listen to that voice for hours at a time.)
Stars - Set Yourself On Fire (one of the best indie CDs out there)
Pearl Jam - self-titled (rockin' back to basics album!)
Pink - I'm Not Dead (I've said how good this is)
Jewel - Goodbye Alice In Wonderland (now this is how Jewel should get beats - nice mixture of rockers (except for the overdone "Satellite,") and pretty Jewel ballads. Great comeback after 0304, which just didn't work.)
Goo Goo Dolls - Let Love In (disappointing for them - B- - with a couple really bad songs that are numbing, But I AM a fan.)

Opinions on some others I have heard:

Paul Simon - Surprise ***1/2 out of 4 (moves him forward in a way that doesn't dilute his personality. And unlike Paul McCartney IMO, his voice is mostly in tact. Paul's classic S&G work can't be topped, but I love Surprise.)

McFly - Just My Luck **1/2 out of 4 (catchy, but too much like a modern boy band doing oldies)

Snow Patrol - Eyes Open ** out of 4 (I still want Final Straw, but this CD is monochromatic IMO and too much like a lackluster Semisonic.)

Gomez - How We Operate **** out of 4 (marvelously blends indie and alt country into its own thing)

Nick Lachey - What's Left Of Me *1/2 out of 4 (the lack of happy love lyrics elevates it from a * rating)

Taking Back Sunday - Louder Now ** out of 4 (to me, it's emo without aim - a little more modern rock than before)

Springsteen's new Seeger covers CD would get ****. It's reverent but rambunctious. I'll get that later in the year.

Also heard stuff from these and wasn't interested in buying their CDs:

Sierra Swan
The Gossip (not very good playing, and vocals that need more training)
Hoobastank
Christina Milian
Mon Frere

Not sure yet about:

Ane Brun
The Stills
Grandaddy

If you want to see other artists I'm impressed by and bought, see my post here:

8. So far, pretty good.
At least, based on two or three listens. I only picked it up recently and I'm still getting a feel for it. Pretty stripped-down sound...sort of in the same vein as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or White Stripes, but it's still it's own thing (some of the vocals have a sort of rough, dirty sexuality that kind of reminds me of early PJ Harvey, and there's some effective use of jangly fuzztone guitar). Overall, I'd recommend it.

4. The Stills are awesome.
Really good post-punk influenced indie rock. Stars are really great as well.

I've been on a really big Refused kick lately. "The Shape Of Punk To Come" and the "New Noise Theology" EP, some of the best hardcore punk you'll ever hear. I recently got their new dvd "Refused Are Fucking Dead" which is a really cool watch, basically talks about the bands implosion, plus some live footage, and two (I think their only two) music videos, "Rather Be Dead" and "New Noise".

17. this is a momentous occasion
for the first time in 14 years, I am allowing myself to listen to "The Wall" by Pink Floyd...or at least some of it.

I downloaded about half of it tonight. This was always my low-mood, self-destructive music back in the day..but now, it just seems melancholy but not overwhelming. Yet, anyway.

The Wreckers - Stand Still, Look Pretty: from cmt.com. absolutely a 4 star album! Has a genuine charm that more country/pop should have. Up there with new ones from Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack, and Brad Paisley. I'm sure it will make my best of 2006.

Also heard stuff from:

Paramore - they are good for being so young. Riffs are somewhat standard, but crisp - and complemented the lead singer's strong vocals well. I'm considering buying it - right now it would get a *** out of 4.

The Fray - might fill the soft rock void, as James Blunt and Daniel Powter don't interest me.
