Just.... I sometimes feel that all that I have worked for in my short, short life... Is just worth nothing. People who call themselves by the name of Democrat turn around because one person won't support the same issue as them. I was taught compassion by my parents, the ability to see good in all. If we start tearing each other apart now, then those who are the real threat to our rights will destroy us.

Please don't get worked up about a few angry posters that were venting. Sometimes folks on DU take their personal issues so seriously that it's hard for them to step back and look at it from a clear perspective. And, we in America on both sides of the aisle are not good at being patient and working for the long-term in our culture of instant gratification.

I don't blame people for wanting change immediately on issues like gay marriage, but results on issues like that don't happen overnight - It look this country nearly 100 years and a civil war to eliminate slavery. But, even after the civil war ended in 1865, it took another 99 years for us to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that made discrimination by race illegal by statute. However, all but the most naive Freepers out there think it eliminated actual discrimination by race in America.

I'm not saying that gays that want to marry should have to wait 200 years, but if you look back 30 years ago - there were no states that even considered allowing civil unions between same-sex couples, and you rarely saw anybody openly gay on television or at the movies. Now, you have several states that allow at least civil unions, and openly gay characters are not uncommon on TV or in the movies. There are Hate Crimes laws now. While progress is too slow, there has been progress made.

I've posted this quote on DU dozens of times over the years, but as Will Rogers once said many years ago, "I'm not a member of an organized political party, I'm a Democrat." It was true when FDR was president, and it's still true today. We need more people to remember that.

I have been posting since September of 2004. I have noticed a change in the way people respond. There are less reasoned arguments and more hurried one-liners, name calling and idea dismissing. The last post I had, two of the responses were, "bullshit."

How can I respond to that? What is his problem with my argument? (apparently everything). It is demeaning and dismissive, and frankly not a very reasoned argument.

It is the era of "go Cheney yourself."
