JOHN STEWART CAN SING
Edited on Sun May-07-06 04:49 PM by no name no slogan

And write, and play guitar. In fact, the man invented California Country-Rock (but don't hold that against him)

If you don't know him, you should.

2. "Hang down your head Tom Dooley"
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

I met her on the mountain, there I took her life
Met her on the mountain, stabbed her with my knife

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry (ah-uh-eye)
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

This time tomorrow,
reckon where I’ll be
Hadn’t-a been for Grayson,
I’d-a been in Tennessee (well now, boy)

Hang down (your head) your head (Dooley) and cry
Hang down your head and cry (ah poor boy, ah well-ah)
Hang down (your head) your head (Dooley) and cry
Poor boy, you’re bound to die (ah well now boy)

Hang down (your head) your head (Dooley) and cry
Hang down your head and cry (ah poor boy, ah well-ah)
Hang down (your head) your head (Dooley) and cry
Poor boy, you’re bound to die

This time tomorrow,
reckon where I’ll be
Down in some lonesome valley
hangin’ from a white oak tree

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry (ah-uh-eye)
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you’re bound to die (ah well now boy)

Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry (poor boy ah well uh)
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you’re bound to die
Poor boy, you’re bound to die
Poor boy, you’re bound to die
Poor boy, you’re bound to .......die

3. Yeah!
He also wrote "I'm A Believer", which was a huge hit for the Monkees. Lately he's been doing a lot of solo acoustic country-folk. He's an amazing, underrated talent, IMHO.

5. Actually, he wrote "Daydream Believer".
"I'm A Believer" was written by Neil Diamond, believe it or not.

You might also remember his song "Gold", which he recorded with Fleetwood Mac as the unbilled backup band. He was big pals with Lindsay Buckingham.

7. That's right. "Gold" was a top 10 single
He also wrote "Never Going Back" which was done by the Lovin' Spoonful. Kind of an ordinary song when performed by himself, actually -- but a pop gem when covered by the Spoonful.

12. Yeah! I didn't know "Never Going Back" was his.
It was the Spoonful's last hit, after the departure of Zal and Sebastian. Red Rhodes sat in on steel guitar.

13. D'oh! That's right
one of them "believer" tunes :P

I actually own "Bombs Away" on CD. It was reissued about 10 years ago, but has become next to impossble to find since then. I've seen it fetch $70+ on eBay.

Buckingham is all over "Bombs Away", too. Backing vox, guitar, production, etc. It really does sound like a late 70s Mac record in many ways.

14. Probably. Lindsey Buckingham co-produced
and played guitar, and sang on that record, so it wouldn't suprise me. It's 1979, what do you expect? :D

11. I was just listening to that tune, actually
I'm on a 70s Cali country/soft-rock kick for some reason: Poco, Firefall, Stewart, Mac (but no Eagles).
