What is your favorite Cocktail?
I like Long Island Ice Teas.

I use to mess with the Bartenders and I would order a Phillips Screwdriver or a Scotch & Prune.

Phillips Screwdriver was Phillips Milk Of Magnesia and Vodka.

7. Chevas & Grapefruit cuts the fat
I use to be on a diet like the Atkins diet and they allowed grapefruit juice only.
Well my best friend and I both come from Irish Families well I am 1/4 Irish. Anyways we had to order a drink while were were on the diet and we didn't want the house shit so we would order the Chevas & Grapefruit so that it would cut the fat while we were getting drunk.

9. You can make it into a poll
I am not up on my cocktails these days. I stopped drinking and taking off my clothes at parties a long time ago. Of course I would only strip down to my bra and panties because it got hot in the room.
I always told people that I had a bathing suit on as a joke. I then would charge a fee to get into the bathroom as a joke also.

24. great
There are many different styles around. The one I prefer is made with crushed limes, fresh mint and brown sugar (plus soda and crushed ice). It tastes like a Caipirinha with a fresh mint note (and rum, not Cachaça ).

33. sadly not
My approach is more like pour-it-in-until-it-looks-right.

To outline it (There should be real recipes around - this is my party approach):
put a half lime (in four pieces) and brown sugar, in a high glass. Crush the lime in the glass. Add a few mint leaves and crush those as well.
Add crushed ice, until the glass is about 3/4 full.
Now pour in white rum until all ice is afloat (barely; you might want to use less).
If you have a shaker handy: use it; otherwise: stirr.
Now fill up the glass with soda.
Add a few mint leaves and/or a Mint twig for decoration and taste.

And once in a while a super dry, super cold Martini up with an olive and made with Bombay Sapphire gin. I love Maker's Mark bourbon with ginger ale as a highball. I like cocktails altogether. What I hate are frozen drinks, yuck.

22. Spanish Coffee, no question
Every place tends to make them differently. The best way is a shot each of Cointreau (some use triple sec instead), Tia Maria (some use kahluha instead), and brandy, with the coffee and topped with whipped cream.

Great for these cold Michigan nights!

26. A dry Martini or a Manhattan, are about equal -
just depends on what I feel like. A Perfect Manhattan is also good sometimes. A Jasmine is a real nice change of pace. In the broader sense of "cocktail" meaning any alcoholic drink - just a nice bourbon on the rocks is the best.

Yeah, that's right- a twist instead of those rotten olives fished out of a jar left on the back shelf of the bar's fridge since Def Leppard was cool. (Actually, in my mind, Def Leppard was never cool)

34. Lots of people offering mixed drinks, but not cocktails
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 05:02 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I don't think I'd go for the philips screwdriver you like, Corarose. But I respect your right to enjoy it. :-) But who knows, maybe it tastes really good. I actually like the taste of - and you may cringe, I won't be offended - diet mountain dew with sloe gin.

Mixed drinks are booze and some kind of mixer, like juice or coke or seltzer. So, screwdrivers, rum and coke, gin and tonic, white russian, Mimosa, Bellini, are all mixed drinks.

Liquors served neat or on the rocks with nothing added to them are neither mixed drinks nor cocktails.

Cocktails are booze mixed with another booze (usually a liqueur, but sometimes another liquor) and generally or more other kinds of mixer (always fresh squeezed juices if juice is called for). So, the Martini, Negroni, Vesper, Aviation, long island iced tea (though that's debatable), Mohito, French 75, Cosmopolitan, etc., are all cocktails.

And you didn't bring this up Corarose, but I'm sick adn tired of the idiots who call cocktails "martinis". Here's the scoop people - "Cocktail" is a category of drink, a "martini" is a specific drink within that category. Please use the terms correctly. I cringe when I go to a restaurant - especially a halfway decent one - and they offer their "martini" menu. Just like "meat" is a category, and "beef wellington" exists within that category. You wouldn't subhead a menu with "beef wellington" and under that include things like pork chops, roasted chicken breast, and duck ala orange.

37. p.s. - martini is my fave, then Negroni and Aviation
I like my martinis very dry, with olives, served straight up and well chilled. I used to keep my gin in the freezer but I find that I actually get more bouquet and more complex tastes from the good gins (like Bombay) if they are kept in the fridge. Otherwise, they're too cold and lose their complexity.

I ordered a martini in Nebraska once, and asked for it straight up (since in midwest, most everyone likes their drinks on the rocks) and the idiot bartender served it NEAT. My God, that was really, really gross.

43. blended or unblended?
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 08:46 PM by Rabrrrrrr
One of those terrible tasting blended ones made with triple sec and cheap tequila, or a shaken unblended straight up margarita made with Cointreau and Cuervo (or better)?

I couldn't believe how good a margarita could be until I made an unblended one from scratch with quality liquor. Wow!!

I also love the Hemingway Daiquiri, which for some reason I always think of daiquiris and margaritas as being somehow connected. Not sure why, but I do.
