Fearful ways to meet a lover
Press Association
Friday April 28, 2006
The Guardian

Scientists have revealed six steps to follow for men or women to land the perfect partner, by making themselves more attractive to the opposite sex.
The methods, published in the New Scientist magazine, are based on findings from a variety of studies. The six key areas identified by researchers are:

Experience fear together. A 1970s experiment showed men who met women on a rickety bridge found the encounter sexier than those who met on a stable bridge. Going to a funfair has a similar effect, with members of the opposite sex looking more attractive to people who had just got off a rollercoaster;

Body language. When people meet a stranger, it is estimated that 55% of their impression is based on appearance and body language. Mirroring posture may help, but not folding arms helps to create a bond;

Music. US psychologists at North Adams state college in Massachusetts discovered that women found pictures of men more attractive when they were listening to soft rock;

Sorry, it's the four paragraph rule. Try guessing what the others are. Many of you will have no problem.

4. I used to go on business trips with a colleauge
who was a real womanizer. One night stand in every place he stayed (behind his wife's back, of course).

His "trick"? He would sit down at the bar next to a woman he was interested in, and pay her no attention and start watching the game. When his team scored he'd yell out "yeah" and startle the woman and make her jump out of her chair. That was how he would always start a conversation.

So, I guess the fear thing works.

8. Funny...I just read an article in National Geographic
(can't remember which issue) that also compared the chemicals that are present when one falls in love to the chemicals that are present in the space of love in long term relationships.

All of the things mentioned in that article raise the dopamine level in the brain. Dopamine is present in many addictive behaviors, so while those steps listed seem like a roadmap, they are really just techniques to trigger the chemical which in some cases triggers the addictive behavior of another.

Give me a guitarist playing southern rock and blues any day. I cannot be responsible for my actions... :)

on edit - then I misunderstood too. But I still stand by my statement! :)

13. it's amusing that you can take that a number of ways
I was more likely to be attracted to men playing or listening to really bizarre jazz, weird or alternative music - but that's just me. I wonder what the response would be if the researchers had played Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music or Ornette Coleman while the subjects glanced at the pictures.

(this is why I'm not a researcher...) ;)
