Tech Help?..Home wireless network..Strange configuartion..Is it Posible?
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 10:05 PM by masmdu
I have a MAC with a DIAL_UP connection to the internet. I hooked up a wireless router to the MAC and the signal is detected by my PC notebook with built in wireless. The PC says I'm connected to the signal put out by my router but when I open a browser on my PC I am unable to browse and the PC offers to try and connect me via the PC's Dialup settings.

If the PC is picking up the signal from my MAC wirelessly (albeit dial-up) why can't I access the internet on my PC wirelessly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2. I am not quite well-versed,
but you may need to configure your operating system to recognize that a dial-up connection is not needed.

In Windows, that is done in the network connections area.

3. The wireless isn't perchance encrypted, is it?
Although I am well-versed in wireless setups, I know almost zero about Mac-PC stuff. It's really my weak point.

4. Your PC is connected to the router, but your router is not connected to

the internet. The router can issue a LAN IP address without being connected to the internet itself. It won't work unless you can get your router an external IP adress. Unless IT has dial-up functionality, or a broadband connection and is issued an external IP address, it won't work.

You MAC is getting a WAN IP address from the modem, and a LAN IP address from the router. Your PC is getting a LAN IP address from the router and that's all. The router needs to serve as your bridge to the internet. Right now it's just a bridge to your Mac. Unless your Mac has some super-cool internet sharing that will play nice with Windows, it's just not possible.

Sorry...
