2. I am woefully out of touch with Aussie/Kiwi music, I must say...I only
recognize 3 of them!
I am a long-time Split Enz/Crowded House/Neil Finn fan...

Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 01:11 PM by SiouxJ
Finn & CH, and Hunters & Collectors. Geez! I haven't thought about them in ages. I was really into them back in the 80's.

On edit: Oh man, how could I forget Midnight Oil! One of the greatest live bands ever!

12. Now you're bringing back memories
I saw them at the Hollywood Palace back in the day. I didn't know who they were but someone gave me free tickets and backstage passes so I went. What a show!

15. Icehouse, the Reels
Icehouse had a great album (they were Flowers before that). The were an early MTV band. The Reels were this obscure poppy contrapunctal proto-Ska band on Polydor/Polygram.

16. Dirty Three
With an honorable mention to the aforementioned not entirely Aussie Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

Dirty Three is a 3 piece...guitar, drums and violin. ROCK violin. No kidding, Warren Ellis plays like a man posessed. I saw them once in Chicago opening for...I don't even remember who, some supposedly *up-and-coming* Touch and Go artist....anyway, whoever it was didn't show so DT ended up playing for like 3 straight hours. I was emotionally drained afterwards, walked out in a complete daze. They're so good it's scary. I highly recommend "Horse Stories", if that helps. ;)

20. Well, if I put Australian, people would include Kiwi bands
like Crowded House or Split Enz. If I put Kiwi, no one knows any.

I'm on the Kiwi side of that particular pissing match btw.

19. not yet mentioned
are INXS.
Not everybody's cup of tea, not exactly mine either.
But I did go seem them once in order to see the opening band Steel Pulse, and had to acknowledge that INXS were actually pretty good -live at least.

29. Ick. INXS.
Hey, I agree with you on somethin'! What a feeling!

Early INXS was okay for being such a milquetoast attempt at "NewWaving" AOR rock.

26. Chris Knox.
And all of his projects, ie. Toy Love, Tall Dwarves, etc. One of the best songwriters in the world-very Lennonesque.

Plus Split Enz. I LOVE early Split Enz. I used to get high and listen to "Dizrythmia" every night after work for a year. I'm still in love with that album.

33. Yeah, he's a Kiwi, and a damn good Kiwi at that.
His story is inextricable from the whole Flying Nun story.` Helped the label grow into what it became in the late 80's.
