1. Why don't you get a real computer?
And run a real OS, like WinXP? Those Macs are just toys.

But its not being used for any high end work.

Just running a backup program...

My biggest beef with both MacOS AND Windows is they constantly force you to upgrade....

Now Linux and BSD...you can always strip down if you have to.

7. precisely
Linux and *BSD are designed to be as custom as you like them, which IMHO is the best part about them both. That and the no licensing fees thing is also really cool!

MacOS and WinXP are so monolithic that it's impossible to really get EXACTLY what you want on your machine. They both shoot for wide acceptance, so they're forced to aim for the lowest common denominator by default.

Although I do have to give Apple credit for using FreeBSD for OS X though...

8. Albeit a very bloated FreeBSD
That doesn't give you many configuration options out of the box - and if you try to strip out Aqua and use TVTWM and Xfree86 instead - fuggeddaboudit

9. Stripped down ...

No kidding.

Just to see if I could do it, I got a stripped down version of Linux running a Pentium II 2/66 laptop with 64megs of RAM. And it all runs in memory.

10. I've been able to get Knoppix to run on old machines as well
Knoppix is great for that...

11. It is ...

This was the first machine I'd tried with Knoppix that wouldn't boot, at least with a GUI. A minimalist version of Puppy Linux worked fine, though.
