Cat owners--microchips
Anyone have their cats tagged with the microchips? I'm thinking of getting them for all of mine, but I'm interested in cost, details, and whether it bothers the cat or not.

Someone told me there are a couple of different ones--are they regional, or national?

I'm sorry I'm slightly ignorant on the topic, even after having cats for so long, but since my cats were all indoors, and until I came back to New England and lost two of my kids over the course of eight months by them getting out and away, I didn't seriously think I needed such a measure. Now I'm determined to make sure that that base is covered. I just want to have more information from people who have had it done, and not a sales pitch from a company trying to sell something.

1. Our cats came with one implanted.
Our last two cats have come from the humane society and they chip them automatically.

One thing you might check is what type of chips the local animal shelter and local vets can scan. There are different chips, iirc. No sense in getting a chip that the animal shelter can't scan.

2. That might be what someone was talking about
with more than one kind out there. Yeah, that's part of the whole research I'm trying to get involved in to learn more about them.

3. We had our cat chipped at the Humane Society when we adopted him.
It was included in the adoption fee, takes only a second, and does not appear to bother the cat in any way. It was just like giving him a regular shot.

If you bring a cat into our Humane Society to be chipped, I think the fee is $6. I don't think the chip is national.

4. My cat has a Home Again microchip
I don't remember how much it cost - I had it done at the vet about 7 years ago. From what I understand, there are two primary companies. Home Again and something else which I don't know the name. I was told they each use different scanners, but that most vets and shelters have both in order to check for different microchips.

6. All of our rescues are chipped, plus, while volunteering at the shelter
I can't tell you of the countless animals that came in and had microchips. I saw a LOT of happy reunions. Call your local humane society and animal control and ask them which one to get. They'll know the region best. Some scanners will pick up more than one brand.
