2. I was there for a summer.
I liked it, and it's a top school in many respects. On the downside, the school is freaking huge (area and people), and it can get VERY hot there, but it's a good place.

But I heard that they are first class, academically. ;)

7. A meely-mouthed weasel who wins the national championship!!!!!!
Hook 'Em Horns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D

Seriously though, it's actually a wonderful school AND it's in the center of a very liberal city AND all the party bars and clubs are on the same street (more or less) which makes partying extremely convenient. Many people go to UT and decide to stay in Austin because they fall in love with this town.

6. I'm intrigued
I'm from CA so I don't know how I'd fit in. I'm fascinated by Austin and I know its a good school. Do you know anything about their film program? I'm an undergrad right now

8. Well considering that Austin now hosts
One of the largest film festivals SXSW, you can bet that the UT film school has got to be pretty good!

I don't much about that program, but I am sure that you can find out pretty easily!

10. You would fit in extremely well
In Austin, everyone fits in. Everyone. If you get a chance to visit UT soon, please let the Texas forum know and we'll have an Austin DU meetup in your honor.

I don't know about the UT film dept off the top of my head, but I'll ask around and get back to you.

22. I'll "hear-hear" that. In Austin, everyone does fit in.
You'll meet gay hippy cowboys in sneaker boots, old women who ride bikes with propellers, heavily tattooed born again Christians who like horror movies, and gunwielding vegetarians.

Too many frat boys for my taste, though.

21. It has an excellent film program. APPLY!
With a major focus on editing, though. Big focus on game development, too. The Radio-Television-Film Department is very difficult to get into, though. I taught there in RTF for one semester. PM me if you have any questions.

As far as Austin goes. I'm an east-coaster and I'm leaving NYC to go back to Austin. I just prefer it. It's a major dyke capital and you'll see more people in Austin with tattoos than probably anywhere else in America. The city even has legislation against discriminating against people with tattoos and body modifications.

The bus is free on days when the ozone is heavy. It's fifty cents otherwise. The school is more conservative than the town, but the town is VERY LEFTY. It's a great place to be young.

Unfortunately, I'm not young.

12. Not to be pedantic, or anything ...
 (as if I'm not normally pedantic), but the first thing you need to know is the school's name. It's ...

The University of Texas at Austin

Don't ask me why they call it that, but they do. Otherwise, cool school in a cool, blue town, in the middle of a deep red sea.

19. Does CAL do it that way?
I didn't think CAL used the "at" word. I had always heard CAL-Berkeley or CAL-San Diego (as if there's no preposition in there at all). Hmm ...

Best of luck with your decision, anyway. :)

20. well
I believe Berkeley is the only UC that gets called Cal (their nickname, I suppose). There's Cal State or CSU (one in the same). I've never heard UCSD called Cal

14. They call it that because there are many
University OF Texas's in Texas. Did that make sense?

They have factions all over the state!

17. Well, it sort of makes sense.
I taught at the University of Texas at Arlington. So, I know how they do it. My point is that they could have done it any number of other ways to avoid the confusion.

Here in GA, there's only one University of Georgia. Other schools in the UGA system have different names. But, you know, in the grand scheme of things, to each state its own. :)

BTW, from having students who went to both schools (UT Austin and UT Arlington), I've heard that Austin is easier. It's also more prestigious. Best of both worlds. Arlington is a tough, tough school.

15. They breed arrogant sports fans who are generally rude to opponents.
And I can speak from personal experience. They get particularly ugly when your team beats their ass. I know that each school spawns a percentage of jerky fans, but due to the size of UT, they have so a freakishly high number.

Sincerely,
The Jayhawks

18. I guess I kinda brushed up against it
during this year's Rose Bowl. I'm also thinking of applying to USC. I was surprised at the amount of Longhorns fans here but I assume that a lot of them were probably disgruntled UCLA fans who want to see USC fail at any cost.

UT rocks. Look at our rankings. Look at our endowment. Look at fucking amazing Austin is. If you're an in-stater, it's a no-brainer. If you can even get in at this point.

I had a great time, met lots of diverse, interesting people, had both conservative and liberal professors, took some fascinating classes. I am moving back to Austin next month, actually.

Go for it!!!

UT Austin wins 15th place in
world list of 200 best universities
November 8, 2004

AUSTIN, Texas—The University of Texas at Austin is the 15th-best university in the world, according to a new global ranking produced by The Times of London newspaper in its Nov. 5 edition.

Among U.S. public universities, only the University of California at Berkeley, which is listed second in the world, ranked higher than UT Austin.

American institutions occupied seven of the top 10 places, with Oxford and Cambridge universities the highest-ranked outside the United States. UT Austin finished ninth among the top 10 North American public and private universities.

The rankings are based on the amount of cited research produced by faculty members, the ratio of faculty to student numbers, a university’s success in attracting foreign students and in attracting internationally renowned academics.

An additional factor in the rankings is the findings from a previous Times Higher Education Supplement survey in which 1,300 academics in 88 countries were asked to name the best institutions in the fields they felt knowledgeable about.
