Tell me why I shouldn't move to Lubec Maine

Lubec is way the hell up the coast, almost to Canada...A good five hours northeast of the 'Port.

You'll have to learn the language and etiquette. It's not like urban New England at-tall. Start now by reading Sarah Graves' murder mystery series. It's set in Eastport but you'll still pick up some wicked good pointers for Lubec. Graves is from away but not a bad sort -- seems to be getting the gist of it.

so I'm used to the winters. I hate Florida. I'm needing small town atmosphere where I can go out my door and walk in the woods. Can't do that here. Hate hurricane mania, hate the politics here. Gotta get out.

I live in a small town in Ohio and I travel a lot aorund the country. I see lots of places that I think are cool. The big cities just aren't for me, though. I've seriously considered moving out west. But when I'm out on the road for a week and I get home to my little Ohio neighborhood I relax and feel comfortable. No other place I've been too makes me feel that way.

and then caught my first glimpse of the White Mountains in NH. Everything in me relaxed and I could take a deep breathe and know I was gonna be safe again. I've been here almost 3 years and I still don't feel at home. My house is like a motel room.

11. Lubec is a far cry from either of those two places, socially and

politically, but you'll do just fine with that experience. Politics down there tends to be more New Hampshire conservative and not at all like liberal Portland, but they're Mainers and they'll respect you anyway. Winter is more desolate up there, but you could get used to it after living in NH.

The smaller the town in Maine, the longer it takes them to warm up to you, but even before they know you they'll be looking out for you. Get the hell out of Florida. You don't belong there. I'm still waiting for it to start:)Lubec is right by FDR's summer home at Campobello,so I've been up there a few times. I don't know why you wouldn't want to move there....or for that matter why you wouldn't. It's convenient to Canada,which might be a plus.

Maybe you can straighten her out:) I don't think Lubec would be too bad,if you don't mind a small town. It's probably better than here(Old Orchard Beach)..although OOB is Ok except in summer,when it is crazy.
BTW,I also lived in N. Conway,Portland, and Florida. I lived in the Keys for 11 years,and although I think they're the best part of Florida...I'm glad I came home to New England.

Yeah, I had a bad falling out with my sister in 2004. She has dual citizenship and actually registered to vote in Mass so she could vote for him. A lot of good that did in MA. She was furious with me because I supported Kerry. A few months ago, I called her and told her I didn't give a shit about her politics or her born again crap and I preferred that we be sisters instead of idiots. She agreed. We don't discuss religion or politics now. Still, it bugs me knowing she supports him. She used to be such a radical liberal, too.

19. Summer is rather short..

thank God:) I have the rest of the year to walk on the beach,which I love to do even in the winter. I understand about the sister thing...I've had a difficult relationship with mine,too. She recently moved from Arizona to Troy,NY so it seems like she's practically next door now. Our parents and brother are all gone now,so it's just she and I left of our immediate family. We've decided that life is too short,and that we're going to work on just being sisters,as you said. I hope things work out for you and your sister..and hope you decide to come to Maine:)

With a finished basement, driveway, yard, and garage in the village and close to the river for $1000/mo + utils. We thought that was a great deal coming from NY. We are a family of five. Our landlords are putting the house on the market next month. We are probably moving up North to Presque Isle with my husband's job.

the only reason I could give you is that if you're from the south, the winters would probably not be friendly, especially if you have arthritis or some other ailment that acts up in the cold.

If you're from New England or Alaska, then I don't see any reason not to go. :)

I drove through on my way to the Maritimes, a zillion years ago. I remember a big kerfluffle over this local wedding, where most of the female cohort of the high school graduating class was tapped to be bridesmaids, and there was some concern over whether some of them were going to be on civil terms with the rest by the time of the event :-)

There was also this wonderful low-rent tourist trap outside of town called the Sardine Museum. The guy that ran it was already in his 70s, so the odds are not good that he's still there doing so :-( I hope he found a successor, it really was both a slice of history and a fascinating goofball obsession...

It's like that in Gloucester Ma, where they once were an island and no one could leave durng the winter. They ended up with 2 main families and if you pissed one off, you pissed off the entire clan.
Bristol VT is the same way. I went back after being away for 20 years and saw people I knew from back then, but it turned out to be their kids. Like a acid trip flash back.

My grandparents and father are from there, though the grandparents winter in Florida now. I've lived in Ca, TX, FL, and born and raised in RI, and there's nothing like New England. And the winters arent *so* bad. OK, the Caribou winters are really bad, but it's a nice friendly town. Everytime I go up there, people know who I am when they look at me, even if we've never met. Kinda weird, but kinda nice too.
