Favorite smells of stinky things
I don't know where the hell this sense memory is coming from, as I'm sitting in a cubicle in Queens, NY, but I can swear I smell something like a cross between fresh horse manure and a freshly lit cigar. Maybe a cigar-smoking vegetarian is using a restroom nearby. (Pardon my freedom.) In any case, these are two of my favorite smells of stinky things. My father used to smoke cigars while he was working, and that was how you could tell he was in a good mood. No cigar while working meant trouble. We also used to own a horse named Nutmeg. I should have worse memories of that smell, because it was my job to clean out her stable. But it is a remarkably pleasant smell to me.

Feel free to share your favorites or let this thread sink like a waterlogged Stogie.

1. Horse manure's okay
I worked on Mackinac Island (no cars) here in Michigan in 1983 and 1984 and I got used to it.
John
My first wife, Sandy, was an Army brat. Her dad used to pitch a regulation Army tent for her and her friends to play in as a child -- and she still finds the smell of treated Army canvas to be a turn-on.
When I found that out, it was off to Captain Kill's Army-Navy Surplus Depot toot sweet.

12. Horse and Cow Manure tells me that I'm out of the city now...

And we had cows and horses growing up, so it makes me think of my dad, and that's a nice memory.

2. Well, for some reason, I've always liked the smell of gasoline
Although I avoid it for obvious health reason! (and no, I don't snort glue, either)...

And, for some reason stinky deasel and air fuel at the airport appeals to me somehow... It reminds me of time spent overseas...

when I first visited it.

13. I like the smell of diesel exhaust.
It reminds me of my childhood riding the school bus.

Now, when I go on long trips I try to stop at truckstops to get that smell.

20. i loved the smell of gasoline so much that i'd occasionally syphon it
cuz i wanted to TASTE it! (doesn't taste like it smells---tastes a bit like celery).

That was back in my pica days (some funky disorder that makes you crave inedible things). I used to love to eat paper (only certain kinds) and I STILL can't go into a lumber yard without licking the wood. Yum! (again, only certain kinds). Pencil lead. Chalk. ANd I wanted badly to taste moth balls, but figured that was tooooo poisonous to attempt.

3. Mineral baths
Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 03:04 PM by bif
We lived near a city with mineral baths. The smell of rotten eggs takes me back to that time. Also, I can smell the Hiram Walker distillery from across the river when the wind is blowing right. What a great smell.

14. My dog rolled in sheep shit
After a bath, my dog goes outside and looks around for a stinky sheep shit to roll in... probably as his mates give him shit for having a bath so he needs to show he's a macho shit roller..

Well, so when i hold him and pet him, commonly theres a dried sheep shit smell to his fur that he sorta likes, and as i love him, it sorta makes me reminisce.

19. When I was really little I used to bath only on rare occassions
and this nasty, green, fungal stuff would build up between my toes. According to my step-mother, I was fascinated by the smell of that.

I'm pretty ashamed now.

Alright, that's my dark, personal revelation for the day. :)

29. Well, not quite that, but
The smell of a kid's hair, unwashed for several days. I try to get a deep sniff or two, before they are sent to bathe. I don't worry, it will smell the same in a day or two. It smells like childhood to me. I also like the smell of a slighty funky baby. Weird.

Also, dried chorinated water on dirty hair, combined with sweat and sunscreen.

24. my dog's feet
because he cuddles up with me in the early AM right before its time to get out of bed ... and that's one of my favorite times of the day -all snug and cozy under the covers, half asleep/half awake, hearing him snore and smelling his Frito-feet in my face.
