Animal rescue group tracked owner through Internet search service

Tristan Carter, whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, holds her cat, Cupcake, after they were reunited in Atlanta, on Feb. 22.

Updated: 10:55 a.m. ET Feb. 23, 2006

ATLANTA - When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Tristan Carter thought she had lost everything — her home, a grandfather, two dogs, a cat and a rabbit.

But Cupcake the cat was alive and well after six months of living as a stray in her hurricane-ravaged neighborhood. On Wednesday, animal rescue volunteers reunited the lithe, 7-pound black cat with Carter, who now lives in Atlanta.

“I lost a grandfather in the hurricane. To find a little kitty survived six months, that’s great,” said Carter, holding Cupcake close and thanking the rescuers who found her.

...snip...

“God works in mysterious ways. She is a gift, she is here to let us know there is hope,” Carter said. “She’s our good luck charm.”

4. I'm happy for her and all, but I have a hard time feeling moved by this
…considering all the separated humans who will never be reunited and may not even find out for certain what happened to their loved ones.

10. All I'm saying is that she did lose a human but found her cat
and was comforted by it. How can that not be moving?

18. That is so terrible and sad.
:cry: My in-laws were luckier than many people in LA and MS. One had her home flooded, others were rescued off of a roof in coastal MS and my sister-in-law's house had severe roof and interior damage.

19. I had only located my Dear Friend's family...
a few years ago. Her aunts and uncle had rejoiced at hearing from her. She had been saving to visit them, but the storm ruined everything.

She still doesn't have her other pets. :cry:
For many people, their pets were all the family that they had. :(
Pets and people are equally needed loved, missed and mourned. :(

edit: How could you not be moved? :(

11. My first click on Sept 2 was to the Louisiana Humane Society
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 02:09 PM by Patiod
that was really easy - $20. We then threw a Mardi Gras party, and raised $1500 for the humans (on our own, we probably could have afforded to give $200, which I didn't think was enough so we decided to extort money from our friends who had more!).

Helping pets doesn't mean you're forgetting the humans.

Tristan Carter holds her cat, Cupcake, after they were reunited in Atlanta Feb. 22. Carter, displaced by Hurricane Katrina, had to leave behind all four of her pets when evacuating New Orleans. For nearly six months, Cupcake never strayed far from Carter's destroyed home.
JOHN AMIS: AP

<snip>
For nearly a half year after the hurricane, the tiny cat lived on her own, never straying far from Carter's destroyed home and surviving all dangers — everything from stray dogs, parasites and starvation.

She lived off of food dropped off daily in her neighborhood by volunteers from Animal Rescue New Orleans. Finally, on Feb. 12, rescuers captured her in a humane animal trap.

<snip>

While a veterinarian treated Cupcake for worms and fleas that she acquired while living as a stray, volunteers worked to find her owner.

<snip>

Carter said animal rescue volunteers called her last week while she was filling up her car at a gas station. Her family had given up any hope of finding their pets — in November, they returned to their former home and searched without success.
