38. Sometimes there really are
HOBGOBLINS on the ice. It's a weird phenomenon that I have witnessed and experienced numerous times at test sessions. Usually what happens is everyone trips on the SAME END of the rink, often in the same spot. Wanting to blame it on bad ice or wardrobe malfunction I more than once checked out "the zone" for ruts, soft spots, feathers or sequins. NOTHING.

I've ALSO seen and experienced being taken out by bad vibes coming from the bleachers. TALES OF THE UNKNOWN!!! :hide:

That fall looked increadiby painful. I'm sorry they had to withdraw from the competition.

The team from Bulgaria looked pretty good too up until their fall. The ice had some bad juju going on last night.

69. Absolutely agree with you.
In fact, Dick Button and the female commentator were saying that last night, that the couples had to concentrate so much on the technical aspect of their programs that it was leading to mistakes, and it was taking away from the espression-aspect of the performance. After all, it IS ice dancing, not ice hockey! They are going to need to change the scoring again, at least for the ice dancing.

71. I was thinking last night that it didn't look like ice dancing at all...
It was looking more and more like pair skating. I guess I was expecting it to look like ballroom dance on ice... less lifts and blade grabbing crap and more grace and flow. The grace seems lacking when they have to think about every difficult part of their program. We've come a long way from Torvell and Dean.

8. I didn't watch for the falls... I watched for the bad costumes.
(I posted this on another thread - but it still applies)

Excluding the falls, I do think Ice Dancing is probably the most graceful of all the figure skating sports, and it's nice to see the skaters do something other than wave their arms around in between quadruple jumps. But the ridiculous costumes seem to take so much away from the sport. Some have been watching just for the falls, but I for one, take perverse joy in seeing some of the get-ups these skaters have the courage to wear (I'm not proud about it, but I do). And while the costumes feed the snarkier side of my personality, there is such a thing as too much. Granted, some of the ice skating costumes have in recent years been tragic - and not just the ones on Tanya Harding. The costumes of the last decade or so have looked like "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" on ice - but the Ice dancing costumes really push the envelope. Some of these girls should get a medal for just being able to skate in those dresses let alone keep them from having a wardrobe malfunction in the middle of a lift. And the make-up!! NBC locked a close-up shot on one of Russian skaters the other night and I'm surprised they didn't have to wipe the make-up off the lens! Now I know these dancers have use a lot of make-up to accentuate their face so that the judges can see their expressions... but these girls looked like Anna Nichole Smith after a three day bender. Seriously... all the skaters looked like they should have been swinging around a pole - not skating for gold. Now back to the costumes... how much is too much anymore? I'm not prude, and I've been known to wear some daring outfits a time or two - but I'm not representing my country in front of millions of people either. To be fair... I am glad that the Chacita Banana costume has made it back to the mainstream in something other than a Chita Rivera retrospective, and thank God someone had the foresight to alter Biork's infamous "Swan Dress" for the Israeli couple - but seriously... this is the Olympics, not "Dancing with the Stars". Can the skaters at least wear some costumes that you don't have to strategically shave for?

Did you see the thing on USA Network yesterday, "Weir Eye for the Skate Guy"? It was on that one hour "Olympic Ice" show that USA does where they review the skating performances, etc. They had Johnny Weir on, and he and these two women were talking about the costumes, snarking on them a bit, etc. It was quite funny.

I provided "color commentary" all night last night for the ice dancing. Seriously, did anyone see the Japanese couple? The woman's outfit and the guy's top were bright yellow and hot pink and I think orange and he chooses white pants to go with that????? :wtf: I think she fell because she caught the glare off those tacky white pants he was wearing and couldn't see where she was going. Black would have been far more complimentary.

In the piece on USA that Johnny Wier was doing, they showed a clip of Peggy Flemming in her chartruse dress that her MOTHER made, and talked about how simple and elegant the dress was. And it really was -- even if I'm not really fond of the color.

Teal leopard print? Really?? That's an insult to leopards everywhere. Where the hell were the PETA people at anyway?

Could these costumes reflect a more tacky Latin Stereotype?? All of the men last night looked like flaming cabana boys, and the women looked like extras from those bad 50's era "Road to Rio"-esque movies. All they needed were the fruit hats and they were good to go!

I heard that last night too... and it just seems to me that this new judging system is one of the reasons for all the carnage on the ice. These skaters have to do all these high scoring technical things... but it doesn't fit the style of dance they are doing. It just looks odd.

For some reason, there was a big triangle shaped cutout in the back of his yellow & pink shirt. It had that weird flesh colored material, but I completely didn't see the point.

Granted, I may be crazy because my sister swears she didn't see it!

My mom, however, said that maybe he went with white pants because they would blend in with the ice and the judges wouldn't be able to see his mistakes as much.

I'll have to watch. I've been waiting all morning to read the costume critiques on the board, but sadly, there hasn't been a one. The costumes were bad.. the falls were really bad...I thought my head was going to explode when I saw some of these things last night. My boyfriend could care less about skating and doesn't appreciate my comments when it comes to bad costumes (or bad dresses if we are watching, say, the Oscars or Emmys). Plus... the drama involved!! I have to agree with Petronius above.. that Italian woman had her partner's death in her eyes (you could see them stomping off in the background when the American couple were on the ice - it wasn't pretty). I think we should have a thread critique going during tonight's performance.

I think Johnny Weir is going to be back on "Olympic Ice" next week. Hopefully you can see it. You could tell that he and the two women on the program just couldn't wait to talk about the costumes. Johnny said the whole over-done costume thing started with the Russians, who admitted they did it because with lots of material, etc., flying around, it concealed weaknesses in their skating.

And what was up with the couple that had the exact same hairstyles? I couldn't concentrate on their skating because their damn hair was so distracting! Hello....you're supposed to be showing emotion...can't see your face....I call for an automatic 2.0 deduction....

33. "lots of material flying around concealed weakness in their skating"
That explained the Russian pair that skated early in the program. She wore this pink-ish red strategically spiraled ruffle thing, and he looked like an extra from "American Grafiti". When they spun around... I wondered how she wasn't flashing everyone (although I do know they use flesh-colored spandex on most of the more daring costumes) - but that wasn't the disturbing part. The things that kept me from even watching the actual skating was the fact that the costume was creeping up her butt so bad it looked painful. I just remember thinking "ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!!" not to mention she just flashed about 2 million people.

32. I wonder if they will replay the falls.. I would love to see that
:)

I still can;t believe there were that many falls.. I have NEVER seen a dance pair fall..ever.. trip, stumble, bot never a flat out fall.. I watched Footballers Wives, Desperate Housewives & Greys anatomy..

I am a skating snob.. I only like Pairs and tolerate ladies..never watch the guys or the dancing

36. I was switching between the dancing and DHW/ Grey's Anatomy...
But I caught a lot of the dancing. You should tune in tonight and do the colour commentary thread with us... you'll appreciate Ice dancing much more. :)

FOX is showing an episode of "House" and the previews for the celebrity ice skating said that the finale is on Monday, February 27.

They have the falls separated so you can watch them. Oh yeah. I spent a great deal of time passing this around today.

the italian chick kept saying puta, puta, puta as she was leaving the ice, it was hilarious and sad. they were doing a great job up until then. Puta means something like motherfucker or to that effect.

I missed the OD.

Margaglio is famous in ice dance circles as not being able to skate, but becoming an Olympic Bronze medallist. (Salt Lake City)
