Satellite alternatives, besides Dish and DirectTV?
I'm out in the sticks, where I can get one (1) channel with an antenna. There is no cable company.

Dish and DirectTV are both out here, but $42/month seems a little steep these days, when really all I watch is the Daily Show and some MSM when disaster strikes. :eyes:

Are there alternatives? (yes, yes, read a book!)

1. No alternative that I know of. It's either DishNetwork or DirectTV
or nothing. It's possible that you could get one local channel with an antenna, but I doubt it. But you can stream C-Span through your computer and watch Daily Show clips at Crooks and Liars.

2. Don't go w/ rural cable!
I lived in a place that had rural cable (very small towns and outside of smalltown city limits w/in 7 miles). 5 years ago it was $42.50 (before tax) for 23 channels!

4. DirecTV has a special they don't advertise but you can ask for.>$10
local channels. We get about 10 channels for under $10, ABC, CBS, NBS, 2 PBS, FOX, another couple, including one international one and a selling channel. We don't have any package other than this. They like to do "local channels" as an add-on, but will (did) give you that if that was all you want. You can pay extra for pay per view, and don't get any movie or cspan or cool things, but it is good if you don't get reception otherwise.
