1. Steve Carrell obviously was a big surprise given where he was seated
All the other favorites were near the stage but Carrell had to make his way through the crowd. He was funny as usual.

I LOVED the red carpet questions about underwear!!!!

Oh and there was Scarlett

2. Phillip Seymour Hoffman winning Best Actor for "Capote"
About damn time this fine, fine actor got his due from a terrific overall body of work.

Hoffman is now the odds on favorite to win an Oscar. And again, about damn time.

3. Yeah but I'm still thinking it'll be Joaquin Phoenix
You're right that PSH is so underwhelmingly acknowledged for the great work he's done (well ok, we'll overlook his roles in "Twister" and "Along Came Polly") but Joaquin Phoenix blew me away as Johnny Cash. The only thing going against him is the fact that essentially he's doing the same thing that Jamie Foxx did last year in "Ray" (Musician traumatized by brother dying during childhood overcomes addiction to become a much beloved american artist)

6. Could also be Heath Ledger
Haven't seen "Walk the Line", but I do hear Phoenix is quite, quite good. This has been a great year for good performances.

40. Nominations come out the 31st
and I have a feeling it's going to be like last year - where any of the 5 males leads are deserving.

PSH acted the hell out of his role, but I seriously thought Capote just went on and on. Phoenix does have a leg up on the others in that he sung his own parts, but Heath Ledger....

Just as long as the phone thrower doesn't get in for Cinderella Man - I'll be happy!

4. I was happy and surprised that Mary Louise Parker won
I was also greatful that she praised the work of John Spencer that was a wonderful thing to do.

What also stuck out was something that was not said by Reese Witherspoon - she was the first one to win anything from Walk the Line and she didn't mention anywhere in her speech about Johnny Cash and June. Joaquin Phoenix did a great speech but still I was shocked when she made no mention of the people who the movie was about.

7. I was glad about MLP too even though I've never seen her show
To be honest, I'm already bored of Desparate Housewives. I give it another year before they shut down that show. But if any of them did win I would have hoped it was Felicity Huffman because she seems the most grounded (with Marcia Cross not that far behind her) and talented of the group. So it was good to see her win best actress for her work in Transamerica although I was pulling for Zhang or Bello to win!

as I don't have HBO. But I've seen Desperate Housewives and just that all four of them were nominated and then MLP. I think MLP is a great actress all the way around so I'm glad she got it.

18. I'm really glad she won for Transamerica
I can't wait to see it -- it opens here later this week.

She won last year for DH -- I really think she is the best actress of the group and agree that Marcia Cross is right behind her -- Bree is totally the opposite of what she's like in real life. She's actually a bit flighty.

:hi:

21. Maybe it's me but Hatcher and Longoria annoy the hell out of me
Longoria because she's everywhere hawking bad shampoo and clothing. Hatcher because she needs to eat a damn donut or something. Teri use to be beautiful but now she scrawnized herself into this stick figure that could never get away with "They're Real and they're Fabulous" When you lose that much weight they end up looking like flapjacks!

when someone talks about Scarlett in *that* way I feel very protective. Like I should slap them for thinking dirty thoughts about her.

Good news for you dr. strangelove, my niece (who's father is an actor) is studying acting in college. Maybe she'll be at the Golden Globes someday.

She'll see a pic of herself sometime soon and decide that it's time to always wear a bra-especially the push-up kind(w/ no padding). They help us live an illusion for a longer time.

Stupid things seem to be growing on a yearly basis (the cup does, at least). I've made an appointment next month w/ a local woman to have them remeasured. She informed me a few years back that I should give up on "pretty bras" and spaghetti straps and just go for what fits and holds me in.
God bless that woman! Back pain has decreased at an impressive level.

14. The acceptance speeches by Hoffman, Lee, and Weisz.
Hoffman was quite humble and admitted he'd just played the part of a lifetime.

Lee was sweet and charming, commenting with awe that he'd just received the director's award from "the Man," Clint Eastwood.

Weisz gave a fluid speech that combined graciousness (e.g., her compliments and thanks to co-star Ralph Fiennes) with acknowledgement of the difficulties faced by the Kenyan people.

I usually don't watch or like awards shows but I thought this one was actually good and fun to watch - no dumb humor in between awards and great variety of films being nominated and awarded and speeches were either great in their tributes to the film or film topic or fun and witty like Hugh Laurie's speech and Geena Davis'

Very cool that she got an award for her first starring role in a film...at age 53. Good for her.

I also liked (totally different subject) that Felicity Huffman actually mentioned the kind of difficulties that transpeople go through. That tends to get lost/ignored, it seems to me.

53. The entire show was hilarious! The most enjoyable major awards show
I've watched in, well, ever. The speeches were so funny and warm and heartfelt. The pacing was good. There were no stupid dance numbers or montages or overly long monologues. I was only planning to watch it while "24" was taping but ended up watching the whole show.

I hope the addition of Jon Stewart helps boost the Oscars in this direction. That show has gotten so boring and tedious over the years.

I'm looking forward to Jon Stewart hosting but to be honest, skip the song & dance stuff. Remember when they did a tap dance number for the Score from "Saving Private Ryan"

To be honest, I find crowd shots more enjoyable since all the actors are sitting around the table getting trashed. We could use more of that!

Weren't all the best picture nominees "interpreted" in dance that year? How awful. I remember the best part was when one dancer's ass completely fell out of the costume.

Yeah, letting them drink was good, although Harrison Ford coming on stage carrying his drink was pretty classless. He has not aged well for me.
