Well, I have some good news, and some bad news about my bone
density scan that I had this morning.....

The good news: Everything's fine, no sign of osteoporosis!

The bad news: I've shrunk! I've always thought that I was about 5'8" tall, give or take a half-inch or so.....

But today I got measured.....I'm 5'7" tall!

How do I deal with this loss?

Help me feel better, please!

96. it went out in the washing machine with the odd socks
that is where everything goes, you know

or else the cat took it.

I've lost an inch too. I blame it on the xtra weight from my boobs pulling my shoulders forward.

And I've been losing weight, mostly in my boobs, so THAT reason is out too!

I'm sure that the washing machine must have taken it!

130. Don't feel bad. Ratio wise, I've lots two inches, going from 5'3 1/2"
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 12:53 AM by Radio_Lady
to 5'1 1/2" -- I'll never again be able to sing, "Five-foot-two, eyes of blue..." oops, brown eyes...

Reason is: discs between vertebrae are shrinking down. My motto? As long as you back doesn't hurt, don't worry about it. It's just another part of the aging process.

My husband used to be 5' 8" and he's shrunk to 5' 6". He also was diagnosed with scoliosis; nobody ever noticed it before we had full body scans. He put a little lift in one of his shoes and it's made all the difference in the world.

I'm wearing a back brace I bought at a medical supply store, or a small backpack which I put handweights in. My curvatures are the traditional one (lordosis and kyphosis are the technical terms). Slumpy shoulders -- I've had this problem since I was a child, and I should have worn a brace when I was a young girl. Just hoping it doesn't get worse.

17. Aw, my dear Call Me Wesley......
It could very well be that.....though the tech who did the test showed me a bit of the x-ray...

It showed a curve to my spine, not a big one, though....She explained that the curve could well explain the height loss.

I did expect some loss.....just not THIS much!

Nonsensical perspective sometimes helps. (I hope so since it's the best I can offer at the moment.)

:hi:

edit: Here's some more: My gramma went from 4 ft 11 to 4 ft 9 (tiniest lady ever!) so it could be worse. I'm glad you're healthy Peggy, and to echo others on the thread, that inch is nothin' compared to the size of your heart.

They say it makes you feel huge and invincible. If, after one dose, you're not 7' 4", demand your money back. And at 7' 4". you could take on any 5' 6" drug dealer.

Sure, there's the whole "illegal" thing, but I'm sure you (especially a 7' 4" you) could find a way around that.

66. Oh, I very much doubt that!
I have never been petite! I still weigh 164 pounds, and at 5'7", I hardly qualify as petite!

I know you're just kidding me, my dear Whoa_Nelly!

But you did make me laugh, and for that I thank you......

68. It only gets worse.
My mom was once 5'7". The last time she was measured (last summer), she was 5'1" - and yes, she was standing up straight. :(

Life isn't measured by how short, tall, thin, or fat we are. We are measured by how much we love, and are loved by others.

87. Well, it happens to all of us as we get older.
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 07:44 PM by RebelOne
There's not much you can do about it. It is a known fact that we shrink in height as we age. I don't think there is a miracle growth hormone available for us middle agers. I am probably older than you. I have had to buy short in slacks and jeans lately when I used to wear a regular length. And I have had to buy higher heels so that I can wear my regular length jeans and slacks. It is hell getting older.

89. Yes, I do believe you are correct about this....
The tech doing the test said she thought my shrinking was mainly due to a slight curve in my spine.

She even showed me the xray......

I may look into ways to straighten that out......

As for your being older.....not likely! I am 62......

My legs seem to be the same length they've always been!

But I thank you for your support, and for your thoughts.

I can't. Well, I could, but it's a little too obvious and bizarre - even by my standards.

 Glad there's no osteoperosis; that's by far the best news.

And the 1" will grow back. All it needs is a little stimulation. I used to be 5'11" myself, but excessive slouching made me lose an inch. And off the wrong axis to boot. One of those medeival stretch machines should do it. Or a few nights at a strip club; they never fail to straighten me out... (oops, just said it. 124. I've dealt with the loss of an inch myself!!

Went into the Army I was 5'11". About little over two years in, we all were getting physicals when I came out to 5'10". Was funny cause I wasn't the only one. Doctors told us since we were Airborne and made all the jumps that it was compacting our joints and back.

I guess over the years I've come to terms with the loss of that extra inch and forgot what it was like to see the world from the eyes of a 5'11" person. You have your good days and your bad days :D
