1. Because we like to work
and like to keep busy.

Some are workaholics because they can't face life, or have low self esteem or had a real asshole for a dad/mom; work becomes an addiction, like booze or knitting or gambling; or iut becomes a substitute for life; or it becomes a way for them to prove they are important or not lazy.

But for many, they truly enjoy what they are doing, and it becomes more than just work. If I could paint 12 hours a day, I probably would. I work at my job many hours; the days that I work, I tend to go all day because I simply enjoy it.

And when I worked for the consulting firm, I worked with a lot of people who were simply fascinated and absorbed by their work, and spent 12 hours or more every day in it. When I was in engineering, I worked with engineers and scientists who were totally absorbed in their work, and did it all day becuase it was so fulfilling to them. They didn't really need much of a hobby, because work was like play to them.

3. Bingo. Sense of accomplishment.
I generally work 14-15 hours a day because I like what I do (I have a full time job working for someone else AND own a company with 7 employees). I enjoy what I do greatly, and it's very fulfilling for me to complete a project. People call me a workaholic all the time, but to me what I'm doing isn't really working. I'm doing what interests me, and people are paying me to do it!

I've never met a workaholic who hated his job. I've met people who had to work a lot to make ends meet, but without fail they were out the door the first moment they could be. Workaholics are people who constantly work because they WANT to.

4. I guess I have the wrong job
There are a bunch of things Id rather be doing than working at my job. I work in the IT department of a freight company. I see some co-workers who work 9-10 hour days and I just dont get it.

I just feel that there are so much more things in life to be stuck at work.

5. I could never work at a job I didn't enjoy.
I've tried it, and I invariably end up getting fired. I just can't apply myself to a job I can't stand. If you LIKE technology, if you're the kind of person who learns new programming languages "just because", spends their vacation sunning on a beach while reading scientific papers on quantum computing, or spands that extra few minutes polishing those fiber connectors because you KNOW that one speck of dust really does make a difference, then you could be a workaholic very easily. Some of us love technology. Hell, I'd be the first on the list for a brain jack :)

When your job IS your hobby, you're never really working.

6. I used to love my job
I hope to feel that again soon.

I am the biggest goody-goody workaholic there is. I will do special projects without a blink. It helps that I am somewhat obsessed with details and just enjoy working hard.

Now I don't give a damn because the people I work for are horrible and I don't care if the building burns down.
