Please help settle a marriage- threatening dispute....
When was the advent of the first cart corrals (the place where you leave your cart in the lot)? My husband insists it was circa 1992-93. I feel it was considerably earlier.

2. It was much earlier
When I was 6 (in 1986) I briefly lived in Sacramento. My brother and I were surprised to see that you needed to pay to use them at our local grocery store. You could get the money back if you returned them to the corral but many people didn't so we would go around returning stray carts for candy money.

4. I first saw them in 1989
at a local store here in Ohio, so I won't even bother to post the name.

5. They are so ubiquitous
that I can't remember them not existing - was going to say at least the late seventies (since I was driving) - but the reality is I just can't remember them not being around - which then clouds my memory as to when they first became real.

8. Here in Sacramento
Raley's and Gemco (long defunct) on Mack road had them as far back as I can recall, which would be roughly 1984ish.

9. Way earlier
At least mid 80s. Before that, I lived in NYC and didn't drive so I don't know.

12. I remember stealing carts from them in middle school
to ride down the town hills. I even have a pic of me riding in one around here somewhere. I graduated from high school in 1993 so it must have been earlier.

14. I KNEW it! He should NEVER argue with me! He's still trying to
insist that he's right, though! HE claims I said they were around before I was born, and I did NOT! He has also shifted to the assertion that our local store did not have them until they built their new location (around 1997.) I also claim this is wrong and have e-mailed the company under the guise of "doing research on the utilization of cart corrals." So I should hear back.
