Just saw 'Munich" at the multiplex.....

Very repetiive, a bit long, violent and after a while, uninvolving. And I passed up Syriana and Kong because I liked the trailer. Spielberg has nothing insightful to say beyond the obvious. Sure he is cinematic genius. But a great storyteller? Nope. He sure hasn't "grown" too much in the last 20 years, except for his wanting to make more serious films.

1. A Spielberg movie repetitive, a bit long, and uninvolving?
I don't believe it!

:eyes:

I will probably go see this, but I imagine my response will be much like yours.

He's not a bad director, he's just not overly inspiring. He's better than Ron Howard, but he's no great director.

4. I think in many ways he is. His camerawork, set design are always superb

And to conjure up films like Close Encounters and E.T. and Raiders. The guy is amazing. These are amazing films and to conceive and pull them off require plenty of imagination and an attention to details few have. Sure he spends lots of money on his "visions" but it is often well spent. I think he is a great filmkmaer.. just not the one who should be tackling heavy themes/stories. He is not built for it.

5. So basically he's style with very little substance...
Overrated to be sure. His films do absolutely nothing for me. Not even visually, I don't find them that interesting. I've always considered him slightly above average for a mainstream director. Hardly anything above that.

7. I'd call it style vs. depth... not substance. And if one's telling

a "family" themed story... not all that much depth is required. You just have to hit the right notes... no need to reinvent the wheel. Though his family films may be a bit base and melodramatic for some, I like them. Anyone who makes films that can be seen and enthusisatically discussed by anyone from an 80... that person's okay by me. A film like E.T. is special. So is Titatic for that matter. They bring people together. And they are reasonably intelligent films. Though, really, Not everyone demands a lot of complexity from films.

I don't think Schindlers list can hold a candle to Polanski's Pianist. Nor can Private Ryan rate up there with the great war movies....(technically, that first 20 min. is insane though!). But I appreciate Spielberg. And I am glad his movies are part of us. He's a good dude.

9. I knew that. I just was mentioning another family film that connects
with people of all ages and of all cultures for that matter. Films like that bring people together. And you can say you hate Spielberg but look me in the eye and tell me you didn't sob when E.T was dying.

10. Haha, I don't remember the last time I even saw ET
Seriously, his films leave absolutely no impression on me whatsoever.

3. Nice to see a decent, if not pithy, review.
So much more worthy than "it sucks ass and there are no big-name actors in it, so no wonder it was so awful."

As for Spielberg, I'm not surprised.

6. Well, I don't know how much more you could tell
about that tragedy that we didn't already see happening before our very eyes. It was a pretty cut and dried attack. We knew who and why.

I remember watching it because I always enjoyed the Olympics as a child. Again, I wonder why Spielberg chose this story, when it's so well known.
