(SPOILER) Brokeback Mountain: End of Movie, & other spoilers, discussion..
At the film's conclusion, Ennis says, to the shirt and postcard, "Jack, I swear..." after he has agreed to attend his daughter's wedding.

Is this line in reference to what he's just done? Is he trying to make amends, in a way, for his missed opportunities for happiness by making sure he emphasizes the important relationships in his life, and this is a first step?

I didn't read the short story. I thought a lot of times Ennis begged off of social events citing work obligations as an excuse, because he felt uncomfortable in those settings or whatever, or just needed an excuse, like when he told Jack he wouldn't be able to see him until November at their last meeting... I thought he felt "conflicted" and didn't really want to see Jack, or wanted some time, and made this excuse... the way it is portrayed in the film I thought there was some ambiguity to this.

1. I think it can be interpreted in many ways
I saw it as the confirmation of his symbolic allegiance to Jack Twist. I thought that it was left unexplained just because there are so many ways to interpret it.

What a beautiful movie. I'll be seeing it again soon.

2. I think he was talking to Jack
while looking at the postcard picture of the mountain and Jack's shirt (or was it Ennis's shirt hanging there, I don't recall). At any rate, I interpreted it as a conversation with a dead loved one. I do that with my mother's picture often (she died just last April). It's comforting in a strange way to talk to the picture the way you would have talked with that person.

As for agreeing to go to the wedding, I think Ennis realized that with Jack gone, he needed his daughter's love and attention (she has never given up on him, the only other constant in his life.)She is literally all that he has left and he realizes it.

3. I think it was both shirts
Jack just wrapped his own shirt over Ennis' before hanging it up.

There was a love there that neither of them would quit even if they could.
