VW Veyron $1,000,000 car 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds 1,001 horses

Dec. 14, 2005 — When your car costs more than $1.2 million, travels over 230 mph, and hits 62 mph in 2.5 seconds, you do not sit in a passenger cabin — you sit in a "survival cell."

The Veyron is a short, curvy two-seater with massive power. Its 1,001 horsepower engine has four turbochargers. The car's features sound like those on a jet: diffuser flaps, air-intake scoops, a tail wing that acts like an airbrake and 1.7 miles of cable to power onboard electronics.

Bugatti, owned by Volkswagen, can only produce one Veyron per week in its newly built factory in France, and will only produce the two-tone vehicle when one is ordered. The company will also stop when it hits 300 orders.

Bugatti has sold 45 Veyrons so far, the majority in the United States, said Georges Keller, Bugatti's head of communications.

The seven-gear, all-wheel-drive Veyron is so fast that its designers customized three different suspension modes: a mode for "standard" driving below 136 mph; a "handling" mode engaged when the front diffuser flaps open, the body drops closer to the ground and the tail wing and spoilers are "deployed"; and a third "top speed" mode, used for speeds above 233 mph, that has to be manually activated with a separate key.

2. FINALLY!
the flying cars we were promised oh so long ago.

This is of course a first year model so they have some kinks to work out in it.....could you imagine walking back into the dealership "Well sir you have to understand" you interrupt "I PAID A MILLION DOLLARS FOR IT!!!!" "Oh yes we will get right on it"

:bounce:

Kidding of course I doubt there would be much problem with customer service. Hell for a Mill they could probably throw in a Phillipino or something to open the door for you.

3. At 249 MPH, the only effective deer-whistle is an imported Philipino
strapped to the roof experiencing an extended 2001 final sequence/rapturization while screaming his or her fool head off.

6. Bugatti will fly a technician to you
from Alsace if you don't have ready access to one of the handful of US service facilities. I suspect most Veyrons will end up in the hands of car collectors like Jay Leno and automobile museums. Too bad that they won't get driven much, as that must be one king-hell ride on the open road.

4. That thing is awesome
It's got the Audi Quattro all wheel drive on there, too (obviously a more advanced version. And that 7 speed DSG gearbox is just too much! It's got a W16 quad-turbo engine (two V8's rotated to make 4 cylinder banks, each one with its own seperate turbo).

B-) drool....

8. Nope, the Veyron has
a custom designed audio system from Germany's Burmester Audiosysteme GMBH. Burmester is perhaps the world's premier designer of solid state high end audio equipment. Extremely pricy handbuilt gear that has a sound so pure and gorgeous that it pretty much defies description.

The key question is... Are there child seat hooks built in?

9. Be careful of the extras they try to add
Choice of color? Sure but it'll cost you a cool $50K

or if you step right over here we can finance it for you.

Oh really. You do that?

Yes yes we do.

As well as, high center the car in the "Top Speed" mode.

20. The kick in the ass they'd provide when they wound up
would be much more fun than a steady power curve. That, and they sound cooler, are smaller, and easier to handle at low revs. I think.

moot. I'd think.

17. That car actually makes me angry
Kudos to the engineers, but VW actually used it as an excuse to fire a few hundred workers. ("development costs; new plant in France; can't start a normal car project...")

The real joke is: they say that projects and plants not making money have to be canned, but they are proud about selling the Veyron at a loss.

19. Bugatti sells these at a loss.
It's strictly a marketing thing. Name recognition and all that.

The reviews have not been so kind. One reviewer claims that it's nearly impossible to drive on twisty mountains roads at normal speeds. And there's a lot of turbo lag, unless your already doing 150mph.

I dunno. I like cars, but that one seems way over the top. I'd prefer a Boxster S. In silver. In case you're wondering.

23. That's odd. Mine won't start in hot weather.
It starts and runs much better in the cold. The warm weather causes my intake manifold to get too hot if it's been sitting in the sun and causes a problem with my fuel pressure.

Sometimes in the summer, if the car has been sitting at the train station parking lot all day in the sun, I have to pop the hood and loosen the gas cap before it will start.

29. Bugattis were always about over the top...
way back in the day, Bugattis were all over the top. That's what's so great about the Veyron, it's a proper Bugatti.

30. They sure were
This is a Bugatti Royale from the 1930s. Note proportion to Jean Bugatti standing next to the car. 12-litre straight 8 engine. Good for 120+ mph. This car still exists, AFAIK, and is one of six Royales built. To call it priceless would be an understatement.

26. The car burns though a 100 liter tank of gas in 12 minutes.
At full-throttle. So says Top Gear, a very popular BBC car program. They did a long segment on it last weekend. Jeremy Clarkson, a presenter (who has one of the best jobs in the world, IMO), drove it from somewhere in northern italy to london. I was glued to the TV. Damn.

A hell of a gas guzzler, but you don't spend $1.2 million on the ultimate motor vehicle and then worry about the mileage.

28. and evidently that Clarkson fellow raced an airplane, and won.
I dunno. If I'm going to spend a cool million on a vehicle, I want it to actually fly. I mean on purpose, not just if you miss a turn on a mountainside or something.

32. Slow Poke
Wouldn't want to drive anything that takes more the 1 second to hit 60. (MPH or Feet)
And 1000 HP don't need no turbo. Manby do it with a single Holly 4-bbl.
