WARNING: Can I rant in the lounge? IM STEAMED!!!!
Just got back from the bank. Had two checks, one to deposit, one to cash. The computer system alerted the teller to put a 5 DAY!!!! hold on my check to be deposited!!! GRRRRRRR!

I've been banking with these people for 9 years and have been physically going into this particular branch every two weeks for 5 years! The regular tellers, whom must be off for the holiday, were gone. They always over ride this crap! I had to deal with this smug asshole who wouldnt help me.

I think it's bullshit that I work for two weeks and cannot even access my OWN MONEY for 5 more days!
I told the guy I would be in tomorrow with my check and will talk with a manager and if they don't work this out I will cancel my account with them and take my money to a credit union.

Ok........damn those people made me mad! I need to shake this off!

My apologies for bringing in this bad vibe to the lounge......thanks for listening :)

3. Rant all you like in the Lounge, my dear titoresque!
It doesn't have to be all love, sunshine and flowers in here...all the time!

I'd say they were screwing you over, and you'd do better in a credit
union....

I've belonged to one since 1980, and I've been very happy with how they run things....

But try to work it out with the manager tomorrow.....it's worth a try, for sure...

And, GOOD LUCK! to all of you.....

15. my credit union did the same thing to me
And it did not bother me a bit. Of course, it was a 2000 check I had written to myself from my credit card, so why not expect some trouble. As I said, it did not bother me. Plus, I have only been at the credit union for three years.

4. Oh man.. that is frustrating. Speaking as a member of a family who
lives and dies by a timely paycheck, a delay can mean screwed up bill payments and late fees and all sorts of crap.

I hope all can be sorted out in a timely fashion.

5. I think it's such a scam.
This happens to me a couple of times a year. I get two larger payments (commission) each year and the bank holds them for up to 10 days. I haven't changed jobs in 6 years, have a record of these types of deposits, use automated deposit and they still hold my fucking money!

Rant away my friend. And yes, I would threaten to close the account. If you have a history with the bank, you should be able to access your money.

6. That just happened to my father with his Paycheck even.
He had checks bouncing all over town because the money was on hold...and, get this, they still charged him thirty bucks a pop to access the overdraft protection he has which is a savings account...with HIS money in it. I'm feeling ya. :hi:

7. oh that stinks, it really does
no problem, vent away

i was lucky, recently i had a large check deposited, but the head teller instructed the other teller to lift the hold, even without asking

very thoughtful

they might be doing that more down here, because of insurance or fema checks tho

8. You might consider a credit union - it's really a better deal than a bank.
The first $100 of any deposit I make is credited immediately, and the rest of it the next business day. Interest rates on loans are better, too. I love my credit union.

9. This was a payroll check?
And you've deposited checks from the same employer with regularity for some time now?

Damn right I'd be pissed. I can understand a hold if it's the first time, but a regular deposit? That's nuts.

How shameful.

Sorry to hear about your bank. used to be banks were helpful and wanted customers. But then the feds allowed the banks to own every other bank in the country, instead of having to be local, and now they couldn't give a goddamn about their customers.

13. You're right to be honked. It isn't fair, when other people
get treated better. Mrs R does all the accounting for my business, and when she deposits a check we want to clear quickly, she tells the manager at the bank (whose office is open so you can always yell in to her), and it's done just like that, even for out-of state checks (which are 90% of the ones we get). And if the manager's not in, it's very rare for a teller to give her a hard time (unless it's a trainee, and Mrs R trains them right fast).

The banks should treat ALL long-standing customers like that, not just business accounts.

Loyalty should count for something. If your bank doesn't want to return your loyalty, tell them you're taking your business to one that will.

That's one good thing about capitalism: Competition. You do NOT have to do business with a bank you're not happy with.

14. That sucks so much!
About 25 years ago, (I think), my bank (the CIBC = Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) asked me if I wanted instant access to any monies deposited, as I had been a long time customer. This was before direct deposit. Before that, when I deposited a cheque, there was a 3 business day wait. Anyway, of course I said yes. So now, when I deposit or have money deposited into my account, the money is instantly available. This seems to be SOP for most banks in Canada.

16. As a banker I have to say
Edited on Fri Nov-25-05 11:17 PM by cfield
Don't be too pissed yet. It's good to know that the people you dealt with today aren't your regulars. Give the ones who know you a chance to do their thing tomorrow. We have new tellers start very rarely, but when we do, it seems like we're left with one old time teller (who knows everyone and how things are done for the regular customers) and get 2 new tellers at once. Well, when the long-time teller is gone (she has bank duties that take her out of the bank quite often), and I'm with a customer or out, and our branch manager is with someone or out of the office, the new tellers HAVE to follow standard policy. They CAN'T take the customer's word that policy is waived due to previous experience.
As frustrating as it is (and believe me I know how it is, I myself live paycheck to paycheck and a one day delay could cause my bills to go unpaid), go in tomorrow and see if your regular teller or manager can waive the hold. Sounds like you have a very positive history and that shouldn't be a problem. But it's not the new tellers' fault-except for the smug part, that had to be a bitch to deal with. Following policy is no excuse for poor customer service and he should have made you understand that you're more than welcome to come back tomorrow to work it out but he's not allowed to bend the rules from you; he shouldn't make you feel like he just doesn't *want* to help you.
I hope it goes well for you tomorrow!

18. Come to Kansas
No wait, don't; Kansas sucks. But, if you ever were here, I'd give you great customer service! I take pride in being a quality bank, and when the bank gets shitty with charges or rules, I do my best to work things out for my customers. And not because I'm deathly loyal to the bank, but because I think the customers deserve it.

Especially the good people on DU!

19. Your bank and your customers are lucky to have you
There are some good tellers where I bank, but they can't improve the situation much.

Ah, Kansas, I passed through it many times on my way to Colorado. I still have a visceral loathing of that interminable interstate.

21. yank your money and run
to a credit union. The one I belong to even has free ATM transactions and the directors are fellow city employees. Plus as a member you're part owner.
