Online daters sue Match.com, Yahoo for fraud
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2005-11-18-matchmaking-fraud_x.htm

This article is a little dated(no pun intended) so I didn't think it would suffice for Breaking News. I'll be the first to fess up that I have used both dating sites but personally have been disappointed in both.

It's not easy finding love in cyberspace, and now some frustrated online daters say they were victims of fraud by two top Internet matchmaking services and have taken their complaints to court.

1. Something just doesn't sound right about this story.
It seems like hiring professional "daters" wouldn't even be cost effective. How much do they get in subscription fees? I can see maybe sending out emails, but go out on dates with them too? I dunno.

3. I think...
Match.com is $30 a month or something $50 for 3 months

Yahoo is 20 for one month.

6. I have seen ads...
That look suspicious, the photos looked way too professional, etc. I got the impression that they were set up to get people(men) into subscribing to porno sites. "I like you, I would like to talk to you more, why don't you sign up at this other site that I am on"

7. We are very simple and easy to fool. Just say that we are cute and we
will hand over our credit cards in no time.

8. Yes, yes we are
On yahoo I even had spam IM's. Women from Africa telling me that they would like to meet me but were short on cash getting a ticket, I am sure there are plenty of guys who fall for it.

2. I used to think this was nuts
and I admit I have been married so long I have no idea what dating is like in the 21st century.

But then I made several good friends I met right here on DU. So I guess it's okay to find a date in cyberspace too. :)

I bet it is more like they give some of the more attractive ones free subscriptions to entice the ones who would never get a date otherwise.
Here are a few of the local jewels from yahoo if I wanted to get involved in online dating:

Did I tell you how MUCH I enjoy being single??Luckily for me, all of these "catches" are conservative.

11. I quit match and they kept tying to get me back
until I finally wrote them and said since the accident I wasn't a complete man anymore.

They stopped bothering me.

13. I met my first wife on Match.com
Now I'm glad to be rid of her!
Talk about fraud, she played me like a fiddle.
She NEVER told me how bad in debt she was before marrying me.

I was one of the first 1000 members to join Match.com way back when it first started. Back then Match.com was free, but since I was one of the original members when they switched to pay, they gave me a Charter Membership for free which I still hold to this day.
When I was married I just hid my profile on there instead of canceling my membership, I listed it again after our split up.
Unfortunately, here where I live now almost every single lady is a Conservative and I refuse to date anyone who supports Bush.
I have not had a date since moving here 2 years ago.

14. If I get another bogus yahoo email from "Svetlana" in Russia
I'm going to sue dammit!

However, if there are any real, single Russian girls out there, please don't hesitate to contact me. :)

You will laugh for hours at the thought of these people breeding. It's a truly scary place.

16. I know this first hand through my job
I work for a major credit card issuer doing merchant disputes. we get disputes EVERY DAY involving match.com, e-harmony, and Yahoo personals. Great Expectations charges Thousands for their services! One amusing claim stated when she tried to cancel the merchant's response was "You're going to be alone forever!"
