so I just walked near a smoker and I can still smell it
it was 2 hours ago.

I came out of the PetFood Store, (kitties need Thanksgiving Dinner too) and this guy was leaning against the wall outside the store, smoking. I gave him as wide a berth as I could but the damn stuff still must have got in my clothes.

I HATE THAT!!!!!!!

4. Think Of The Positive. You're discomfort is temporary
Whereas his discomfort will be with him until he somehow, someway, finds a way to quit the habit he probably detests.

7. What babies this world has created.
I can remember when smoking was allowed EVERYWHERE, except in church, unless you were Catholic, and then it was even allowed there.

I can remember riding with one of our car pool ladies, she in her robe and turban and drinking coffee and smoking a Kool as she delivered us to school.

I can remember people smoking in grocery stores, theatres, restaurants, at school events, ball games, and at town meetings.

Now, most of these places have been declared smoke-free. But that wasn't enough for the anti-smokers who seem to be hell-bent on having smoking all but outlawed, and I'm sure that they'd do that, if there were any chance that it would fly.

So this guy mentioned in the OP goes outside to smoke his cigarette, and still that's not enough for the OP. I just wondered how she would have handled the world of the past, where smokers smoked anywhere they damned well pleased. Even going outside is not enough...maybe smokers should all be banished to some distant island, where they won't offend any anti-smokers.

13. Dang, I don't remember anyone smoking in church!
But I do remember when you could light up in the grocery store, as long as you were past the registers.

It's still like that in Quebec.

and parked their hats on the windowsills during Mass.

Maddy, m'dear, get yourself off DU and go enjoy your holiday, OK?

I'm about to do so myself.

20. Seriously!
I'm only in my 30s and I can remember most of that well--it really only started changing the last 20 years. (Hell, in my old hometown in VA you could still smoke in the grocery store up until about two or three years ago--tobacco state, y'know.)

22. In my first job out of college - folks smoked in their cubicles
Now it is such a distant memory that seems odd, but at the time (not THAT long ago) it didn't seem unusual at all.

27. Your story is simply too tragic to tell...
You should probably just keep it to yourself; at any rate, I'm quite sure that no one in the world will ever truly understand the incredible depth and character of it, the self-evident nobility of your sad and needless suffering, you poor, poor thing...
If only the cigarette smokers would all finally cease; then the world would be truly perfect at last.
Sob...
Now you've gone and done it! Now I'm deeply depressed!
And y'know, with that precise description you've shared, now I'm beginning to feel as if I can smell it TOO! WHOOO! What a STINK!
And now it's STAYING! It WON'T GO AWAY!
I'm going to have to go find some heroin, or a razor or a gun! This is simply TOO MUCH!!!
THANKS, yellow dog... thanks a LOT!
