1. All worthy inductees, but
why is George Harrison on the list? Isn't he already in with the Beatles?

11. His solo career was one of the better Beatles solo ventures
IMHO, even better than McCartney and Wings, definitely.

my take is that ZZ Top and Bob Seger are overrated.

Jackson Browne is a worthy nominee.

12. "Running on Empty" rocks
and how about "Doctor My Eyes"?

Jackson is a great songwriter, more of the reflective sort than the testosterone OD sort.

Don't forget, he's been one of the most committed, consistent progressive voices on the planet for 3 decades. From No Nukes to opposition to the current regime, he's been very political and very outspoken. Check out the Lives in the Balance record, or "Casino Nation" from the newest record, The Naked Ride Home.

CASINO NATION

In a weapons producing nation under Jesus
In the fabled crucible of the free world
Camera crews search for clues amid the detritus
And entertainment shapes the land
The way the hammer shapes the hand

Gleaming faces in the checkout counter at the Church of Fame
The lucky winners cheer Casino Nation
All those not on TV only have themselves to blame
And don't quite seem to understand
The way the hammer shapes the hand

Out beyond the ethernet the spectrum spreads
DC to daylight, the cowboy mogul rides
Never worry where the gold for all this glory's gonna come from
Get along dogies, it's coming out of your hides

The intentional cultivation of a criminal class
The future lit by brightly burning bridges
Justice fully clothed to hide the heart of glass
That shatters in a thousand Ruby Ridges
And everywhere the good prepare for perpetual war
And let their weapons shape the plan
The way the hammer shapes the hand

Lyrics by Jackson Browne
Music by Jackson Browne, Kevin McCormick, Mark Goldenberg, Mauricio Lewak, Jeff Young

32. "testosterone OD" is not necessary to rock..
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 11:13 PM by mitchum
I present: Little Richard

I'm sorry, but "Doctor My Eyes" and "Running On Empty" do not rock.
And if you are going to elevate Browne because he is a progressive, don't you also have to knock off points since he beats women (D. Hannah)?

18. you think it's bad now
wait until the artists that are popular now come "of age."

I think they should limit inductions to 1 or 2 a year. Considering there has not been a worthwhile member created in the last 15 years, there definitely are not 2 new HOF-worth bands coming onto the scene every year.

But one can hope that the HOF won't bog itself down with that stipulation...

24. Double-take
I had to read your post twice. I read...

"Wonder if Dave Mason is in?"

as:

"Wonder if Dave Manson is in?"

(Dave Manson is (or was, I don't know his status) as a hockey player partial to fisticuffs)

Which brought my next question: "What's Dave Manson doing in a Civil War uniform?" I thought he'd gone to one of those booths at a town fair where they take a picture that looks like it was taken around the 1860's. Maybe it'd be a good publicity photo for a toughguy defenseman (I can't think of how, but still...maybe. But your picture there looks exactly like Dave Manson, thousand-yard stare and all. Here's the closest picture I could find to show what I mean:

Now I've only had one beer, so I got it all cleared up in my head after a little while. I still don't know who the picture's of, but I'm satisfied it's not Dave Manson.

21. Bob Seger is "mullet rock?"
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 09:41 PM by NightTrain
I hardly think the man who wrote the anti-war anthem, "2+2=?," qualifies as "mullet rock."

Granted, you might've accurately called Seger mullet rock a year before that, when he recorded his pro-war song parody, "Ballad of the Yellow Berets," under the pseudonym of the Beach Bums, but he obviously had a serious change of heart on Vietnam between those two recordings.

And frankly, as one who was born and raised working class, I get goddamned sick and tired of the snide remarks I hear among so-called "tolerant liberals" about America's "white trash." Guess you only qualify as oppressed if you're gay, a person of color, an illegal alien, or a criminal in jail!

i'm hardly in the position of being some kind of liberal elitist

i just think segar is bad fm 'classic' rock is all. i put him right up there w/ styx, journey, and foghat and don't see how the voters at the r&r hall could pass up the pistols and patti smith year after year in favor segar and zz top

as for his antiwar positions, i had no idea and good for him

26. it's all opinion
unless you're talking about which one is more influential. In that case you'd have to go with the Sex Pistols, but what's "better" is totally subjective.

39. Isn't it possible
that some people just don't care much for Bob Seger?

Honestly, there are only two musicians who, when they come on the radio, have me automatically reaching to change the station. Seger is one of them.

Tom Petty is the other.

Just not my cup of tea. I'm happy that Seger is a progressive and anti-war. Hooray!

But if he has something he wants to say about his politics, I personally wish he'd just say it.

44. yes, that is a pretty lame field
I would put Jackson Brown in, though, because he's got soul.

While I am at it, ZZ Top and Bob Seger are neither great nor influential. About the most important moment in ZZ's career was when MTV came out and they startd coopted the Duran Duran sound. "Legs" is lifted from "Hungry Like the Wolf".

Bob Segar cannot sing. "Down on May-yay-yay-yane Street", "Ahh-oooooh", my dog's a-barking! More like down on Lame Street.

45. What the hell does everyone have against the double Z's?
I'm a big fan of ZZ Top, have been for years. I'm always partial to a hard-rocking bluesy sound and a sense of humor.

Bit of trivia about the boys: if you watch Back to the Future Part III and see the bluegrass band, guess who's playing? Yup, the double Z's are on that stage, rocking the 1800s.

Me, I don't much care for Jackson Browne or Bob Seger, but that's because their styles of music don't much appeal to me on a visceral level. I find Traffic a bit pretentious. I adore Prince and am surprised he wasn't already in there. Of course George Harrison belongs in there, for All Things Must Pass if nothing else. I know very little about the Dells. But quitcher rankin on the double Z's - music's all a matter of personal taste, anyway, and some of us love their sound.
