127. I've got that In-N-Out urge!
For those who aren't familiar, the chain is owned by a fairly religious family, they even put bible verses on some of the paper goods. Back in the '80's they had a bumper sticker that had "In-N-Out" on the top line and "Burger" on the bottom.

Someone got the idea to scratch out the "B" and "r" and suddenly "In-N-Out urge" stickers were everywhere. The word Burger was subsequently replaced with a drawing of a burger.

The best, and the menu is limited to five items - hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, shakes, and soft drinks.

12. others: None of them...
..I respect everyone's opinions here, mine is different. I do not feel that any fast food burger is worthy of the word "best". It would be like saying what is the "best" bush policy...again my response would be, "none of them".

I confess to liking a good burger, especially a good homemade backyard grilled burger with sliced Walla Walla onions, a leaf of crisp ice-berg lettuce, a few fresh dill pickles, a slice of beefsteak tomato, a few plain potato chips topped with a toasted bun which has been scraped with a hint of mayonnaise. That's a BURGER which can be spoken of in the same sentence as the word "best".

Multiply this burger by a hundred fold, include a good selection of homemade veggie burgers add a bunch of sliced hot-dogs, a large bowl of potato salad, some honey sweetened pork-n-beans, watermelon, a nice selection of micro-brews, lotsa pop, and every single one of you lounge regulars and DU Mods along with any children you wish to bring.... put MrScorpio and Progmom in charge of the music, on a nice spring day with blossoming fruit trees all around..... NOW we can REALLY start talking about the word :"BEST"

IMHO of course. :toast:

Double Double Animal Style!

#2 Sonic. #3 Wendys.

That's it for me in the FF burger world. If I can't find one of these, I won't eat a burger.

I never have understood why they haven't expanded off the west coast. I've never seen an In N' Out that DIDN'T have a packed dining room and a line wrapping around the building at lunchtime.

True enough, but I don't much care for 'em. I admire that they are a good company, but the burger is too small, and I get tired of that Thousand Island dressing real fast.

118. I recently ate my first in-n-out burger
after being threatened with bodily injury and an immediate expulsion from SoCal if I refused.

I gotta say, I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's a decent hamburger, but the way you all carry on about it one would think it was the 2nd coming of Christ. And the Thousand Island dressing? WHAT THE FUCK is that about?? Disgusting. Oh...and what's the deal with the secret menu? My SoCal-native friend marches up to the counter and orders a "Double-Double Animal Style". They knew exactly what she meant. That shit's not on the menu. It's like a secret SoCal handshake or something. Not a good way to initiate the newcomers into the In-N-Out cult. Oh...and what the hell is up with the bible verses on the french fry containers? Kinda creepy if you ask me.

Now the fries...I get that, the fries rock.

19. Swensons
It is a small independent place in Stow,OH. They make old time burgers called sweetburger. Sugar is add to the meat before the hand made patties are made. Now some of you are going to think sweet and burger don't go, but it not over done. The sweet is just subtle.

43. Oh, I forgot about A&W.
We have one of the oldest A&W's in existence just a few miles from my house, though it barely qualifies as "fast food". It's been in business since the 1940's and still has its full kitchen, so the food tends to be a bit slow. It's delicious though :9 It's also one of the only A&W's in the country that is NOT required to follow their standardized corporate menu. They were going to require it some years ago, but updating their kitchen would have required major alterations to the historic structure.

BTW, this particular A&W has an interesting place in American history too. If you're a George Lucas fan and have seen American Graffiti, this A&W stand was the inspiration for the movie and was the real life source for the events in the films drive in scenes. If not for the success of American Graffiti, Star Wars and Lucas other marks on American culture would have never happened. If not for A&W, there never would have been a Darth Vader!

My kids don't understand why I go out of my way to eat lunch at a run down little drive in on a quiet tree lined downtown street, but I'm guessing that you would :)

40. I went with BK
off that list, anyway. I like the size, the bun, the burger, and the default toppings. I don't have to say "no...." with them.

McDonalds are icky. I have yet to get one that didn't soak the bun in it's own grease. That's disgusting. Also onions are not my friend.

I'm not too big a fan of places that use mayo as a default either.

By far, the best burger I've had is a place in Anchorage called Road Runner's. Delicious stuff.

I also love Culver's.

But for the best burgers, if you aren't making them yourself, you have to hit local dives. There's one back home called "Ray's Beefburgers" which is just amazing.

48. hmmm. Unfortunatly I could probably eat anywhere
McDonald's - I can eat all of their regular burgers - big mac, QP, and just the regular cheeseburgers (of course you need at least two) the fries USED to be the best, now they suck - thanks, food police (like people go to Mc D's for thier health :wtf: ).

Burger King - first bite is always good but then they start to gag you - I often feel regret after eating here - don't care for mayo on burgers, double cheeseburger was ok when they had it - not my first choice for junkfood

Wendy's - singles w/cheese no mayo extra onions are ok, and when the fires are hot they are pretty good. I actually LIKE thier chili if you put the hot syrup in it and have onions and cheese

White Castle - I have actually had these back in Indiana, out here they are only available in the freezer at grocery store, don't recal how they were especially - rehydrated onions like McD's regualr burger I think, and a pickle - kind of steamed like Wendys?

Hardee's - Bleh reminds me of drive in movie theater hambugers

FudRucker's - is this fast food? thought it was a regular restaurant? Not bad but too much money and hype for what it is (always wins best burger from Tucson's alt weekly paper but there are better)

Other - Sonic - haven't had one in a while - good limeade, Jack in the Box - good greasy tacos and they have an OK cheeseburger - Ultimate or something, but in general I don't care for their burgers. Decent O-rings though.

What else, oh someone mentioned A & W - I remember our old drive in, but not the burgers especially. Used to love the rood beer.

Awaiting Tucson's first In and Out - sure have heard good things, will try it for sure even if it means going out of the way.

Having said all that I will come to the picnic and I'll have mine done medium, salt, onion, pickle and cheese if you are doin' it. No mayo, please.

67. Tommy's is awesome
My old collegiate post-midnight hangout at Beverly and Rampart in LA. Two doubles, no damn cheese. The aftertaste is guaranteed for at least three days. Now the closest Tommy's to me is in Barstow but I still make it once or twice a year.

The Whopper is King. Sometimes I try to pretend otherwise but once I return it's clear cut and I wonder what I'm thinking.

Polls like this always feature Wendy's dominance just like Clark for pres. I love the thick Frosties but otherwise I'm boycotting Wendy's until they learn not to put cheese on my burgers. That's been a 10 year problem with that chain no matter what method I use to thwart the gooey yellow crap.

....and their drive thru lines were painfully slow.

i chose culver's in austin over whataburger any day. plus culver's has the best fries of any burger joint in texas.

interestingly, texans pronounce whataburger as "water-burger"....i always got a kick out of that.

96. Gibson and Jenkins couldn't hold a candle to Ryan
7 no-hitters, 12 one hitters, 5714 strikeouts, 6.55 hits per nine innings, 2.03 batting average for hitters against him, 215 games with ten or more strikeouts (all are records. Bob Gibson and Fergie Jenkins wish they were that good. If he'd been on any good teams in his career, he'd have had 500 wins.

As for his politics, he is Republican, but he's also endorsed Democrats, most notably John Sharp for Leutenant Governor of Texas. Didn't affect his pitching, or his ability to spank the little twerp Ventura when he rushed the mound.

102. ryan was great....no doubt
his longevity was amazing. his 7 no-hitters, unbelievable. his abilty to prompt ventura to rush the mound and then bloody his face, unimpressive to me. it's not worth mentioning if you want to talk about his greatness.

talk about guys that didn't pitch for any good teams, fergie won 20+ games a year 6 times in a row with the cubs. then 2 years later he won 25.

ryan was great, no doubt. i'd still take gibby or fergie before ryan.

as for his politics, he contributed to george w bush during 2000 and 2004. some here are able to forgive bush supporters from 2000 that changed their mind by 2004. but what can you say about idiots that supported bushco in 2000, saw the destruction, 911, greed, war, corruption and failure and then supported him in 2004? all the no-hitters in the world can't buy ryan a brain. he's an idiot.

112. If I wasted my hate on everyone who supported Bush
I would be out of work, friendless, and with few relatives I could speak to. Ryan buys into a lie, like many other people. I don't like that about him, but he's been a hero to many, he's been a good public image, he's involved in charities... I won't write off the good he's done just because he doesn't understand politics. He's not one of the evil ones, he's one of the misguided ones. And he's not so partisan that he doesn't cross party lines sometimes. He's a moderate businessman who has dealings with people in power. In Texas, that means you have dealings with BushCo and the Dancing Republican Dingbats.

Bush owned the Rangers while Ryan played for them. They know each other outside of politics.

114. i don't hate the guy.......
....but i do think he's an idiot. there are plenty of business people that don't buy into the republican bullcrap.

ryan was great. one of the greatest ever. his numbers were huge....he racked up a lot of stats in 20-some years in the league. his rookie card is worth a mint (or at least it was).

i'd still take fergie and his 6 straight 20+ game winning years and his friendly, gentle demeanor (i don't ever remember him trying to maim guys with his fastball and then smashing them in the face) or gibson (despite the fact that i always hated the cardinals) over ryan if i owned a team.

as for hamburgers....i like white castle's over the lot of them.

90. They have a Whataburger in KINGMAN, ARIZONA!
A REAL Texan, when he feels hungry and lonely, packs the kids and his friends in the car, and by-God drives the ninetly minutes it takes to get from Las Vegas to Kingman, just to eat a Whataburger. He brings his complaining, bitching friends along, too, whether they like it or not. Maybe what I'm trying to say is that a Whataburger is worth kidnapping your friends for. The Kingman Whataburger, by the way, while tasting roughly the same, has not mastered the grease-proportion yet as have teh Whataburgers Back Home, and are certainly not as good as the Whataburger in Kilgore that has the classic cars in the lobby.

And Whataburger, although I am devoted to it, is nothing compared to my obsession with real East Texas spicy barbecue sauce... You'll never good barbecue as good again.

Your essay brought a tear to my eye. I lived in Glasgow friggin' Montana for a year back in the early eighties, and I dang near starved to death. No chicken fried steak, no real burgers and no Mexican food. They had a little joint called "Taco John's" that sold this thing they called a taco-it was actually sort of a bean slurry wrapped in a hard taco shell and served with a catsup-based sauce. By the end of a year, I would have wept for an enchilada. I thank the good God daily that I am back in Texas among the Whataburgers, the Mexican joints, and the barbecue dives.

They may not be the best, but damn! At least they cook 'em when you order 'em, the fries are outstanding, the music is cool, and the sayings on the walls and the tables...well, you decide:

"Do you really think man clawed his way to the top of the food chain to eat soy?"

"Our buns are freshly baked. And quite honestly, that's as personal as we're going to get."

I didn't think I'd ever see 'em this side of the Mississippi, and they went and opened one here in NJ, not 10 miles from my house!

73. In 'n' Out, among regional or national chains
Though it's their chocolate shakes that I love most of all.

Needless to say, the best hamburgers I've ever had were not from franchises. In 'n' Out is good, though, and they'll customize it for you if you know the secret handshakes.

Burger King would probably be my choice among the mega-chains. Not good for you (of course, my burger of choice there used to be the Double Whopper with cheese and no onions), but tastier than most of the others. Haven't eaten at any fast-food outlet in months and, when I did, it was usually Del Taco or sometimes Taco Bell...at least they have fiber in their offerings (my favorite is Del Taco's bean burrito with green chilis) and the nutritional profiles of the stuff I tend to favor aren't too bad at all.

Wendy's- double with cheese and depending on my mood either everything or nothing but extra pickles. Also depends if I'm planning on eating it there or while I'm driving. Can't eat an everything while ya drive.

Sliders-double cheeseburgers extra pickles only.

MickeyD's - double cheeseburger just the way they make them only because I don't want to wait for them to throw on a few extra pickles.

130. Almost as obscure as my other mention
The N.E.T. in Parkersburg, WV.

A textbook *humongous* handful of hamburger with the simplest of trimmings, German potato salad and a glass of the German lager they brew on-premises. All in the time it takes to fight the McD's drive-thru at lunchtime.

A west central WV institution.
