32. Pretty good, but I prefer the second record Glenn Gould made,
Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 10:11 PM by swag
the one he recorded just before his death. You've got to be able to stand his audible groaning, of course.

I think Murray Perahia has probably done a good recording. I wonder if Charles Rosen has.

Oh, my god, and I heard Anne Marie McDermott do the Variations at Reed College a few months ago. Performer and audience members (yours truly included) were wiping tears from eyes. Surprising, perhaps, for such allegedly mechanical pieces, but there are some very emotionally compelling passages. She was wonderful.

The first variation just cheers me up so much on the heels of the aria.

And I like to hear my girlie playing her favorites on the Yamaha console piano in the other room. I'll plunk hopelessly at one or two of them when she's not in the house.

Sorry to go on like that, especially to someone who knows so much more about music than I do.

I'll look for more of your posts.

33. No problem...
It is easy for us to think of the Baroque keyboard works as mechanical. However, that idea is completely of our own doing. The music of the time was VERY emotional. Bach wasn't necessarily meant to be played metronomically.

:)

But they are varying their tempos too. A little bit. Not as bad as a Bach-performer, though. ;)

You just can't beat 70s ECM. Everything on that label is awesome.

28. One thing about ECM...
Even if the music on the occasional release isn't top drawer, you can always count on it sounding good. ECM has a sound (and look) every bit as distinctive as the Blue Note recordings of the 60's.

I tell you what, though. I do miss the old LP days simply because that larger format allowed for some great album art.

ECM has had its share of great album covers thanks to Barbara Wojirsch and Dieter Rehm . Cool stuff!
