3. For starters:
That thread "adults can learn a lot from children" just made me smile.
I had been skipping over it because it had so few entries, after seeing it I now recommend it to you. It will make you smile too.

Another thing which makes me smile is YOU MissHoneychurch. This is because I know that you are from Germany. I have SOOO many fond memories of your lovely country and it's warm people. I will likely never see it again and that is sad but if things change then I will go back. The fact that I am speaking here and now to one of it's citizens is what makes me smile.

4. I read the thread
it made me smile also.

Thank you. It is a good feeling to know that one isn't hated because of coming from Germany (and believe me, there are still a lot of people who treat us like sh*t because of the Third Reich). Why do you think you won't be able to come back to Germany? Where were you when you were here?

15. I was there off and on for about 1/2 of my first 20 years.
I will be 51 this month so I have not seen your beautiful land in 30 years. As an "army brat" I started out in Stuttgart. I was too young to remember that but my mom claims that I spoke only german back then. Later we returned to Germany, to the Erlangen area. We lived off base in a very small town called Doebenreuth and later in a slightly larger town called Hausen. Eventually we moved into government qtrs in Erlangen. The castle up in Nurnburg, the Churches there, the Kristkringle Mart is soon to get underway, those Lebkuchen, I could go on and on with just this area.

By the time I became a teenager we moved to Berlin. This was my junior-high school period. I loved that city too. The Tiergarten, the Europa center (where I ice skated in that skating ring oftentimes), The differing flavors of life imparted in the then 3 zones of occupation which I had access to, American, French and British and one glorious day in East Berlin too.

When I turned 18 the Viet Nam War was just starting to wind down. I joined the Army and wound up in Scwabach. I immediately got a bicycle and like any good Sagittarius I went exploring. I befriended a young lady in this town and she introduced me to her friends, next thing you know I was spending much of my spare time with my new friends. They showed me the best places to go do everything, eating, drinking, partying along a nearby river, ice-skating and Nachwandurung and.....sorry this has gotten way lengthy...I hope you understand now YOU make me smile. I was SOOO very lucky to experience your country. I have never been financially stable enough to return. Should things change, I will be back and if I can do so I will be back to stay!

17. don't apologize for the length
I enjoyed reading it.

You would like it now also. A lot changed of course. Esp. in the Eastern part, so many towns got restored.

I know exactly what you mean. I have similar feelings for the U.S. I am however lucky enough to be able to visit the States almost every year. And being here on DU, talking to you all gives me a good feeling as well.

I will add you to my buddy list.

30. I have never been on anyones buddy list before!
I am honored indeed, MissHoneychurch. Typing that last post has caused a further flood of memories about your wonderful land. This I promise myself in front of you: Someway, somehow, I will get back there! For me, in my memories even the air was fresher there, oh and I almost forgot that EVERYONE in Berlin had a garden, some quite small others an entire back yard in size. On a mid-summer night the very air was pure perfume there and that is no exaggeration!

I live in Washington State, I love this place too. I know I would not be able to leave here permanently, only because I could not take Mt.Rainier, the Cascades or the San Jaun Islands with me back to Germany. I have some fond memories here as well, but for some strange reason although I lived my younger years in Germany, I had enough adult sense to fully appreciate what a treasure I was experiencing while there.

I spoke of the places but not the people. It is my distinct impression that the German people as a whole are much more relaxed than we Americans are. You folks laugh easier too. In America it is more often than not: ME ME ME. In Germany it always seemed to be us, us, us. Another thing: You folks seemed to be more intelligent, perhaps not in an educated way, (we are equals there), but in that way one feels around someone who actually listens and considers what is being said. I almost feel that we Americans have an underlying nervousness while you Germans have an underlying calmness instead. I must admit that as a whole your countrymen's driving skills were a bit frightening.

I have NEVER looked on the German people as the products of a war lost, when it comes to that I have always felt sad for a people who had been duped. I feel that way about much of my own countrymen here as well. Sure it is fun to bash freepers and fundies but in reality they too are my fellow Americans and IMO they are duped too. Just like an addict's senses are clouded by drugs, these folks have been clouded by their religions or their politicians or more often than not by their own families. America is wreaking havoc on this planet, when the dust finally settles I know that the German people will be there to help make things right.

So you see MissHoneychurch I am easily outspoken on the topic of Germany. I have a profound respect and affection for your homeland and those who reside there. When you, who I know to be German innocently ask; "What makes you smile?", there is NO WAY I could skip posting my thoughts in your thread. btw: I still have no clue what it means to be on a "buddy list" here in the DU but I am honored to be on yours.

32. WOW
sometimes it is interesting to see someone elses look at Germany. When you say, the Germans are laughing easier, I don't have that feeling myself. Everytime I come back from another country to Germany I am shocked how unfriendly the Germans can be and how complicated. But I guess we all find easier bad things about ourselves than the good things.

Being on the Buddy list means that whenever I want to send you a pm, it is faster than searching for your username and then write the pm. Actually that is all there is to the buddy list.

I would love to talk to you more about your view of Germany and my view of the U.S. I think we can learn from each other. Let me know if you are interested in exchanging email or yahoo ID

11. these things make ME smile
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

When Harry crawls up into my lap, turns a couple of times, lays down, and looks at me with those big, big eyes as if to say, "You are mine and I am yours, you are the love of my life." Harry is the kitty love of my life. I adore him like no cat I've ever known.
