Grrrrrrr. An expensive day here at White Rose!

Arrrgh!

One of my iMacs died. The Graphite iMac DV I got used four years ago now will not restart.

I replaced the clock/PRAM battery ($14), and reset the PMU and it still does not start.

So I just bid on a replacement on Ebay... If I get it, that will be $150 including shipping.

NOT happy.

I tore this one apart and oddly, it starts (or rather tries to start) when I unplug the power to the HD... I wonder if this means the HD was drawing too many amps suddenly?

Hmmm... Should I buy a HD just in case?

Good thing I have backups.

2. I'm just glad that I don't have to send things out for repair.
If I can get the parts I can fix most anything.

3. Hubband works on puters
and asks if you have tried a new power supply. He says what you are describing is usually a symptom of a bad power supply. He works on PC's, not Mac's but it's worth a shot since it's usually not a very expensive fix.

6. That's next on the list.
If the Hard Drive replacement doesn't work. (I need a spare hard drive here anyway as I used my spare a couple months back.)

8. He says if this is one of those
all-in-one machines, if the other two things don't work, if the monitor is shorting out it could be causing your problem, too.

12. Thanks!
One good thing... The iMac DV is MUCH easier to work on than the original Bondi Blue iMac.

4. Hold on, Ben. $150 is way too much

I purchased 4 iMac G3s on ebay several months back for $220 plus shipping (on behalf of my employer). We have an old DV model, so I'm assuming you're talking about the G3, correct me if I'm wrong. I'd gladly sell you one dirt cheap if they were mine to sell, but I think if you have time to shop around, you can save some money.

Let me see if I can find a web addy for the company we bought them from. They do recycling/refurb.

On edit: I'll have to look at the office tomorrow. There's nothing in our email to trace the supplier.

Oh, and btw, I'm no expert, but it sounds like it might be a power supply on your unit.

7. I'll have to trace it at the office tomorrow, sorry for the delay
I inadvertently obliterated all correspondence on the transaction. But we should have some paper trail at the office. Ack, I hate to lose that contact info. That company is cool.

14. Strange
I had trouble with my iBook today. Used it. Shut it down. Had to boot it up again and it wouldn't start. It was fully charged. Plugging it in didn't do it either. So I removed the battery and then plugged it in and it started. Are there sun spots or something? I've never had this problem before.

16. Maybe that's the problem
Maybe there should be.

I had to boot up on electric alone this evening, but then put the battery back in and unplugged and am running on battery now. I have a feeling this is one of those mystery ailments that fixes itself.

Well, I can hope, can't I.

Hard little planet to spot, and I've never lived anywhere with a clear horizon.

17. Two suggestions that will make you very happy:
http://www.shrevesystems.com and http://www.megamacs.com

Both have tons of good used Macs and parts as well.

I've dealt with both and they're good honest people.
